The aim will be to publicize all the mitigation and adaptation measures being taken by the Balearic Islands against climate change under the Energy Transition and Climate Change Act, a pioneer in Spain. In addition, the aim is to gather information in order to promote the change to new economic and territorial models of climate governance and the implementation of pilot projects for the adaptation of the Islands through meetings with territories and entities working in island territories and in the Mediterranean.
The Vice President of the Government and Minister of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Juan Pedro Yllanes, will participate as part of the Spanish delegation in this summit along with the Director General of Energy and Climate Change of the Government, Pep Malagrava.
In this sense, Yllanes will participate in a side event organized by the European Commission on the formulation of policies for the implementation of innovative regional solutions for adaptation to climate change. This event presents initiatives linked to innovations in climate policies (adaptation roadmaps for climate transition, energy and blue economy), as well as practical application projects. The Vice-President will share space at this event with the Basque Deputy Minister for Environmental Sustainability, the President of the Committee of the Regions, the Greenland Minister for Energy and Environment and the New Caledonian Minister in charge of ecological transition.
Yllanes will also participate in an event organized by the UN on increasing resilience ambition and small island leadership. In this section, the Government wants to show together with Dominica and the UN, the leadership of small islands, such as the Balearic Islands, in the development of adaptation goals, setting ambitious targets, and the integration of adaptation and resilience in ministries and sectoral activities.
On the other hand, the Vice President will also participate with the Catalan Minister of Climate Action and the Vice President of the Occitania Region in the presentation of the Euro-Mediterranean Pact for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, focused on promoting actions to increase resilience and address the global climate emergency jointly in a region so vulnerable according to IPCC studies.
During the days of the summit, the Balearic delegation will also take the opportunity to hold various working meetings with other Spanish and international regions that share the same concerns about climate change.
