Accompanied by the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez, whom she thanked for the work carried out to address prostitution, the president has defended the importance of conferences like these that “serve to add proposals” in order to “eradicate the situation of injustice for so many women” that prostitution represents, a “violation of the human rights of women”.
Armengol also thanked the work done by the entities that work with people who practice prostitution, a “magnificent” task, especially during the pandemic, “in which prostituted women have had many more difficulties”.
During her words, Armengol recalled that in 2019 the Govern approved the first autonomous Plan to combat trafficking in women and girls for sexual exploitation, an “ambitious plan that emphasizes the pimp” and explained that the Govern has promoted a project in which six more autonomous communities participate and that has been included in the Balearic investment strategy for economic recovery through European funds. The project, called “Network of autonomous communities for a life free of violence for women in contexts of prostitution and the elimination of trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and adolescents”, involves an investment of 38.6 million euros and has a duration of four years.
“We lead a project to tackle prostitution to help 2,500 women to leave,” said the president, who also recalled that, according to a study conducted by the Study Group of Prostitution of the UIB commissioned by IBDona, nine out of ten women in prostitution would stop if they had an alternative.
It is planned to provide them with training programs, initiatives aimed at socio-occupational insertion, aid to validate the educational qualifications of migrant women, offer psychological support, etc. In addition to the Balearic Islands, which is the leading community, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla la Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia and Navarra are also participating.
The conference was also attended by the Councilor of Presidency, Public Function and Equality, Mercedes Garrido; the director of the Institut Balear de la Dona, Maria Duran; the island director of the Consell de Mallorca, Rosa Cursach, and several members of the municipal government team and representatives of the consistory.
