The President of the Consell, Catalina Cladera, the Councillor for Transition, Tourism and Sports, Andreu Serra, and the Councillor for the Presidency, Javier de Juan, presented at a press conference a new call for the programme of tourist stays “Gaudeix l’illa” specifically the second edition dedicated to the elderly, which also includes sports dynamism. This project, in four editions, has already benefited 52 hotel establishments with 43,000 people.

The main objective is to encourage the opening of hotel establishments and other sectors linked to tourism beyond the summer, through the raffle of tourist stays in accommodation on the island.

“With this call, we are fulfilling two objectives, which are to help reactivate the social, emotional and physical life of the elderly and to energise the tourism sector by helping to advance the opening of the season,” said President Cladera. “We have good prospects for the tourist season and with this initiative, we want to accentuate the activation of the sector when first the better,” said Cladera. “If the stays until now extended the season beyond the summer, now we do it just before Easter, to help advance the opening.”

Therefore, the Fundació Mallorca Turisme will distribute 2,250 vouchers for two people, exchangeable for a two-night, three-day, half-board stay in a hotel in Mallorca between 15 March and 7 April. The stays will begin on Tuesday morning and end on Thursday at midday, and will include active sporting and tourist activities for the beneficiaries, who must be over 65 or retired.

The stays will be spread over four weeks:

First week: 15 to 17 March
Second week: 22 to 24 March
Third week: 29 to 31 March
Fourth week: from 5 to 7 April.
The councillor Andreu Serra explained that “Gaudeix l’illa Sènior” will run from Tuesday to Thursday, so “we are dealing with dates that traditionally remain empty during the high season”. In addition, Serra reaffirmed that the aim of the programme is also to “activate the complementary and local catering offer, and that the activity is generated in the hotels” in the weeks leading up to Easter.

The beneficiaries of the voucher will have to pay 50 euros for this stay (with snack and dinner included) and the activities that take place, as the Mallorca Tourism Foundation subsidises the remaining 200 euros of the value of the stay. Therefore, the budget of the call is 450,000 euros (50% co-financed by the Consell Insular and the Balearic Government), and will cover the cost of 2,250 double rooms in hotels of at least 3 stars (3 keys in the case of flats).

According to the call, 8 hotels from four different areas of the island will participate: Palma, Serra de Tramuntana and Raiguer, Migjorn, Play Llevant, each one will offer around 560 stays during the whole period of this “Gaudeix l’illa Sènior”.

People who want to apply for one of these vouchers must register at gaudeixsenior.com before 15th February. They must be residents of Mallorca, be retired (or partially retired) or over 65 years old.
