Rafaela Sánchez, the director-general for teaching staff, explained at the end of the meeting that “what has been approved today means that 2,646 interim teachers will have a permanent post through the merit-based competition and the competitive examinations of 2023 and 2024”. And he stressed that “it is a very big effort for this community to get such a large number of vacancies”. The aim of the Regional Ministry of Education and Vocational Training is to reach the percentage of interim teaching posts of 8%, as set out in the new state regulations. “We estimate that with the offer we have approved we will even achieve a lower percentage, around 7.6%.

The director-general explained that between the places that have already been included in the competitive examination processes from 2016 until now and those that will be taken out in 2023 and 2024 in the Balearic Islands, a total of 8,000 places will have been taken out in the competitive examinations. “This, despite the effort involved, has to be done because we want to reach the figure of 8%. I would like to remind you that in 2015 the average number of interims in this community was around 40%. With the public examinations we have held every year, we have brought it down to 26% and now with these extraordinary measures it will be below 8%”.

It should be borne in mind that teaching bodies are state bodies and are governed by state regulations.

2022 competitive examinations

Beyond what corresponds to the new state regulations for the years 2023 and 2024, this year’s competitive examination process for 2022 is already closed. After the deadline for registration for the Balearic Islands’ 2022 competitive teaching examinations, there are a total of 3,938 applicants for a total of 796 vacancies. These vacancies correspond to the replacement rates for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

History of civil service examinations in the Balearic Islands

Since 2017, including the competitive examinations of this year 2022, 4,275 competitive examination places have been announced. In the years 2023 and 2024, a total of 2,646 will be called within the new state stabilisation regulations, to which more than a thousand places will have to be added from the replacement rates for the years 2021, 2022 and 2023, which means that more than a thousand places are expected to be added. Thus, by the end of 2024, more than 8,000 competitive examination places will be available in the Balearic Islands.
