For the eighth consecutive year, Social Security enrolment in the Balearic Islands reached a new all-time high, with 592,787 people enrolled. This is the highest enrolment ever recorded in the entire historical series in the Islands, despite the fact that it occurred in a month in which the highest enrolment of the year is not usually recorded. All in all, the year-on-year increase in Social Security enrolment in the Islands is 13.3%, the highest in Spain as a whole, which has seen enrolment grow by 4.3%. On the other hand, the unemployment figures also reflect very low records in the month of June, standing at 34,248 unemployed, which is 45.4% less than a year ago.
The Councillor for Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, Iago Negueruela, today presented last month’s enrolment and unemployment figures together with the Director-General for Economic Model and Employment, Llorenç Pou, and said that the June figures show an administrative unemployment rate of 5.4%, which represents full employment for this period.
In this regard, the councillor pointed out that the Balearic Islands are leading the way in job creation and the reduction of unemployment in Spain, and are showing a faster rate of growth than the rest of the country. In fact, the Islands are the only community that is already at full employment.
Another fact highlighted by the minister is that the number of self-employed workers has also reached an all-time high, exceeding 100,000 self-employed workers for the first time. Specifically, 100,489 self-employed people were registered, a figure that demonstrates “dynamism in the field of self-employment and in the economy” and which allows us to foresee that employment will continue to grow in the medium term, according to Negueruela.
Permanent employment stands at 75.5%.
Permanent contracts are once again a distinguished element, confirming that the quality of employment is already the norm in the Islands’ labour market. For the third consecutive month, the percentage of new contracts that are permanent stands at around 80%, consolidating the change in the Balearic labour market scenario. In just one year, the labour market has turned around, going from 24.5% of permanent contracts in June 2021 to 75.5% this year. By islands, Formentera stands at 96%, followed by Ibiza (86.4%), Menorca (85.2) and Mallorca (71.1%). Young people stand out as one of the age groups that have benefited most from this change in trend, motivated by the Labour Reform.
Nevertheless, the temporary employment rate has gone from 33% in 2019 to 14.6% in June 2022, figures that are already comparable with the EU-27.
Unemployment falls by 45.4% to 34,248 unemployed persons
Finally, 34,248 people were registered as unemployed in June, the lowest figure in the last 15 years for this period, and representing a fall of 45.4% compared to a year ago. This is the sharpest fall in the whole of Spain, which reduced unemployment by 20.3%.
