The discount vouchers promoted by the Vice-Presidency of the Government and the Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, through the Directorate-General for Trade, will be available to the public from 4 October.
The programme, a campaign to encourage small and medium-sized businesses in Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera, will put one million euros into circulation through the distribution of 67,000 15-euro vouchers, exchangeable for purchases of more than 30 euros, with which the government expects to mobilise more than three million euros in local consumption.
This was explained by the regional secretary for Productive Sectors, Jesús Jurado, at the beginning of the ceremony in which the emblematic label was awarded to eight establishments in Porreres.
“With the launch of this new edition of the “Bons Illes Balears”, the Government is strengthening local commerce, in line with the strategy of boosting the productive sectors of our islands. It is necessary that trade gains weight within the Balearic economic model,” said Jurado.
Porreres joins the Emblemàtics Balears project with a total of eight establishments
Up to eight establishments in the municipality of Porreres have joined the Emblemàtics Balears project. The regional secretary for Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Jesús Jurado, and the mayoress of Porreres, Francisca Mora, today recognised the businesses with the presentation of the plaque that distinguishes them as emblematic. The event was attended by the director general of Commerce, Miquel Piñol; the managing director of the IDI, Mariona Luis, and the councillor for Commerce, Maria Antònia Veny; as well as representatives of the establishments.
The programme, promoted by the Vice-presidency and Regional Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, through the Directorate General of Commerce and the Balearic Islands Institute of Innovation (IDI), was born out of the need to protect local commercial activity and, more specifically, that of the most traditional establishments in the municipalities.
The businesses that are members of Emblemàtics Balears in Porreres are:
Bárbara Art (handicrafts/home equipment): long-established.
Can na Jerònia (clothing and accessories): with a long history.
Calçats Salleras (handicrafts/footwear): deeply rooted
Can Binimelis (drugstore and ironmonger’s): rooted in history
Cas Montuïrer (household equipment/hardware): with history and heritage
Floristería y Jardinería Can Murtó (floral decoration/gardening): with history and heritage
Mans (clothing and accessories/footwear): with history
Sa Cooperativa de Porreres (food): rooted in history and heritage
One of the objectives of this project is to showcase the uniqueness of each municipality through its emblematic establishments. Although the initiative focuses on listed shops, the rest of the commercial fabric also benefits, as the emblematic establishments also act as a driving force and attraction for visitors from inside and outside the islands.
The Institute for Business Innovation of the Balearic Islands (IDI), an entity dependent on the Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, and responsible for the project together with the Directorate General of Trade, has published a manual so that the town councils themselves can identify the businesses that meet the requirements to be emblematic. In fact, a series of categories have been established to unify the criteria among all the participants in the project. Thus, a business can be classified as rooted (with a singular trade or product); with history (with more than 75 years of life as a general rule, with exceptions after 50 years of age), and with heritage (with outstanding architectural elements). Establishments that meet these three categories are emblematic
Emblemàtics de les Illes Balears is a living project, which is growing as more town councils and businesses join in. There are currently 19 municipalities throughout the Balearic Islands with a total of 239 shops listed. The municipalities that already have listed establishments are Alaró (4), Algaida (5), Consell (6), Esporles (5), Inca (14), Lloseta (7), Llucmajor (11), Manacor (25), Marratxí (12), Palma (75), Pollença (9), Porreres (8), Santanyí (7), Alaior (5), Ferreries (11), Maó (19), Santa Eulària des Riu (5), Sant Josep de sa Talaia (5), Formentera (Sant Ferran, 1 and Sant Francesc Xavier, 5). By category, there are 61 emblematic establishments; 79 with roots and history; 25 with heritage and history; 43 with history; 26 with roots; 3 with roots and heritage, and 2 with heritage.
The platform used to publicise the project is the website www.emblematicsbalears.es. It is available in Catalan, Spanish and English, as it is also intended to reach the public outside the Islands so that the emblematic sites can be a tourist attraction and can promote the rest of the commercial fabric of each municipality.
