Inca Town Council has held a children’s party to mark the reopening of this space, located in the city centre, to the public.
The aim of the renovation project, which has involved an investment of 865,390.38 euros, is to reconnect the centre with the Sant Francesc neighbourhood, mainly by modifying the entrance to the car park and removing a section of the wall.
Inca is celebrating the arrival of autumn with a big children’s party to mark the reopening of the Mercat Cobert square, following the completion of the improvement and renovation work on this public space. Throughout the morning, the locals enjoyed activities, children’s workshops and a toy library with lots of games for the little ones. The recreational day also included street entertainment, music and food trucks.

“The Plaça del Mercat Cobert is located in a neuralgic area of our city, in the heart of the old town and the main shopping area of Inca. However, its configuration did not allow a correct visual perception of the surroundings and it had become only a place to pass through. Therefore, with the renovation of this square we want to revitalise the area and improve the connection and accessibility between the neighbourhood of San Francisco and the city centre”, says the mayor of Inca, Virgilio Moreno.
Thus, the reform project of the Mercat Cobert square has mainly involved the elimination of the access ramp to the car park of the Mercat Cobert building and a section of the wall and the pergola of the existing building in the square, as well as the construction of a new pergola on the staircase leading to the supermarket. In addition, the urban facilities and the covered market building have been adapted to the new layout of the square.
In addition, the waterproofing, the paving of the square and the surrounding streets and the street lighting has been renewed. New planters with vegetation and new street furniture have also been installed.
“Our aim is, little by little, to create spaces that are more pleasant and integrated into the environment, where there is a lot of activity and where they are attractive for residents and visitors,” stresses the councillor for Urban Planning, Andreu Caballero.
The refurbishment work on the Mercat Cobert square, which aimed to give urban continuity from Calle Mayor to Calle del Olmo in order to facilitate accessibility to the centre from the Sant Francesc neighbourhood by modifying the entrance to the car park and replacing the finishing materials, involved an investment of 865,390.38 euros. For the development of this project, the Tourist Accommodation Exchange Consortium (CBAT) of the Government of the Balearic Islands has contributed 500,000 euros.
