The talks, workshops and forest visits are now available for schools.
The Xarxa Forestal, promoted by the Forest Management Service of the Regional Ministry of the Environment and Territory, has published the Guide to Forestry Awareness Activities 2022-2023, aimed at schools. Thus, teachers can now begin to choose the activities – talks, workshops or forestry visits – that are most appropriate according to the curriculum.

As for the talks, each session lasts 50 minutes and can focus on eight different forestry topics, including forest management, forest fire prevention and the adaptation of forests to climate change. The aim is to improve students’ relationship with forests and to promote a risk culture with regard to forest fires.

The workshops include forestry materials, such as trunks, leaves or seeds, and aim to bring the forest into the classroom to raise awareness of it. Along the same lines, the forestry visits allow not only to get to know the forest masses closest to the school, but also the operational bases where the forest fire extinguishing resources are located (Son Bonet in Mallorca, Sa Coma in Eivissa and S’Arangí in Menorca). It will also be possible to visit areas that have suffered a forest fire, as well as public estates or, in the case of Mallorca, the Forestry Centre of the Balearic Islands (CEFOR).

The Xarxa Forestal also has several exhibitions

The Xarxa Forestal also has several exhibitions on the world of forestry and forestry materials that can be borrowed. Likewise, entities or administrations can also request training activities related to the prevention of forest fires in homes located in or near forest areas.

The educational offer can be consulted on the website xarxaforestal.org, where there are also educational materials available online, such as games, posters or guides on various aspects of forestry in the archipelago.

These initiatives are promoted by the Forest Management and Land Protection Service and the Balearic Institute of Nature (IBANAT), with the support of environmental agents. The activities favour the transmission of knowledge and experiences about forest areas (holm oak, pine, wild olive, garrigue…) and support initiatives for the defence of forest heritage.
