The Consell de Govern, at the proposal of the Conselleria de Modelo Económico, Turismo y Trabajo, has approved the authorisation of expenditure of 15 million euros for the granting of subsidies for modernisation and innovation in hygiene and cleaning in tourist accommodation establishments, aimed at the purchase of elevating bed mechanisms, within the framework of the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience, financed by the European Union Next Generation EU.

This Plan was conceived as a roadmap for the modernisation of the Spanish economy, the recovery of economic growth and job creation after the COVID-19 crisis, as well as to prepare the country to face the challenges of the future.

Within the general objective relating to modernisation and innovation in the hygiene and cleanliness of accommodation establishments, in order to improve quality and comfort, provided for in Law 8/2012, on tourism in the Balearic Islands, accommodation establishments that have voluntarily obtained a star rating and that must carry out at least one daily cleaning of the room are obliged to ensure that all the beds in the establishment, except for extra beds, are mechanically or electrically elevatable.

In this way, this measure aims to increase the competitiveness of tourism businesses by incorporating high standards of sustainability, because tourism must contribute to protecting and promoting cultural diversity and the well-being of the people living in the Balearic Islands, generating quality work and supporting local economies.
