The Ministry of Science and Innovation has launched the 2022 ‘City of Science and Innovation call, which distinguishes cities that are firmly committed to innovation with public policies in this field and that promote local structures, institutions and companies with strong scientific, a technological and innovative components in their territory.
This distinction also recognises the important role of local entities in the promotion of their territories as a crucial element that determines economic and social development.
Up to a maximum of 10 distinctions will be awarded in each of the three categories, aimed at cities with up to 20,000 inhabitants; cities with between 20,001 and 100,000 inhabitants or cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. The deadline for submitting applications will begin on 18 October 2022 and end on 28 October 2022.
This call will especially value innovative initiatives in the provision of public services, e-government, free access to information and public procurement of innovation as a driver of R&D&I, as well as those actions that align local authorities with the objectives of the Horizon Europe Strategy.
The distinction of “City of Science and Innovation” will be valid for three years, after which it must be renewed.
The cities recognised with this distinction are part of the “Network of Cities of Science and Innovation” or INNPULSO Network, which is a forum for meeting and defining innovative local policies.
Currently, 83 cities of all sizes are part of the Innpulso Network, a space where good practices in the management of innovative policies and communication initiatives are also shared in order to communicate these projects to citizens.
The Network is also an increasingly active agent for the promotion of innovative policies, such as public procurement of innovation, support for SMEs and entrepreneurs and the definition of innovation criteria. It also promotes and supports participation in projects in the context of European programmes.
