The Vice President and Councillor for Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Juan Pedro Yllanes, and the Director General of Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, presented new data on the energy transition in the Balearic Islands this Tuesday, focusing on the third quarter of 2022.

The vice president reported that in the first nine months of 2022, 49% more self-consumption installations have been installed than in 2021. In 2021 a total of 2,415 installations were installed (1,834 in Mallorca, 276 in Menorca, 286 in Ibiza and 19 in Formentera) and in the first nine months of 2022 alone 3,596 have been installed (2,831 in Mallorca, 420 in Menorca, 304 in Ibiza and 41 in Formentera).

Figures self-consumption installations in the Balearic Islands

These figures bring the total number of self-consumption installations in the Balearic Islands at the end of the third quarter of 2022 to 8,444 installations (6,494 in Mallorca, 1,037 in Menorca, 832 in Ibiza and 81 in Formentera), which represents an increase of 24.4% over the previous quarter of the same year. This means that in 2021 the total number of self-consumption installations on the islands was 4,848 (3,663 in Mallorca, 617 in Menorca, 528 in Ibiza and 40 in Formentera).

The vice president reported that “self-consumption installations are increasing exponentially. It is good news that the citizens of the islands are involved in a context of energy and climate crisis and that they go hand in hand with the administrations in the process of decarbonisation of the Balearic Islands”. “In just nine months the number of self-consumption installations in the Balearic Islands has increased by almost 50%, and this means that many more people and companies are seeing their electricity bills reduced,” he said.

In this regard, Yllanes recalled that “thanks to the right to self-consumption recently approved by this coalition government, a new right acquired by the citizens of the Balearic Islands, many families will see the implementation of renewables in their homes or businesses favoured and speeded up. This, as I said, not only helps to reduce the cost of electricity bills, but also helps the Islands to be at the forefront of the decarbonisation process that has begun and helps us to make progress towards the targets we have set”.

For his part, the Director General for Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, stressed that “the figures for the third quarter maintain the trend of increasing self-consumption and year after year we are increasing the figures for the previous year. In addition, in the renewable generation, we exceeded 200 MW of installed renewable power to achieve an important milestone. The figures are positive, but we need to accelerate even more, given the energy crisis and the climate emergency we are experiencing.

Self-consumption power

In terms of self-consumption installed capacity, 28,431 kW have already been installed in the first nine months of 2022, which is 40% more than the total capacity for the whole of 2021, when 17,478 kW were installed. By islands, Mallorca has installed the most power in these nine months: 21,426 kW, followed by Menorca with 3,360 kW, Ibiza with 3,310 kW and Formentera with 335 kW.

The total installed power of self-consumption would be 74,498 kW in all the Balearic Islands. That is to say that in 2021 the total installed self-consumption power was 46,067 kW. In 2022, the given quarterly evolution meant that in the first quarter a total of 53,968 kW was reached, while in the second quarter it reached 63,837 kW. The latest data show that in the third quarter of this year we already reached the 74,498 kW mentioned above, which represents an increase of 16.7 % compared to the previous quarter. By islands, the distribution of self-consumption power would be as follows: Majorca would have accumulated 54.9 MW, 73.7% of the entire Balearic Islands, and an increase of 8.7% compared to the previous quarter. For its part, Menorca would accumulate 9.8 MW, 13.1% of the Balearic Islands and has increased by 0.9 MW compared to the previous quarter. Likewise, Ibiza would have 9 MW (12.1 % of the total), has increased its capacity by 0.9 MW with respect to the previous quarter. Finally, Formentera would have 0.75 MW installed (1 % of the total for the islands) and would have increased its capacity by 0.1 MW with respect to the second quarter of 2022.

In this sense, the increase in power is significantly higher at the level of individuals and goes from 18,116 kW in 2021 to the current 34,437 kW. The increase in installed capacity at the individual level between the third quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of the same year was +24.6%. For companies, the capacity has increased from 20,214 kW in 2021 to the current 29,628 kW. The difference between the second quarter of 2022 and the third quarter of 2022 was +12.3%.

It should be noted that the number of installations by individuals has increased by 23 % compared to the last quarter of 2022, from 5,755 installations to the current 7,080. At the company level, the number of installations has risen from 928 in the second quarter of 2022 to 1,072 today, an increase of 15.5% compared to the second quarter.

Renewable energy penetration

Compared to the figures for 2021, the Islands see a 34.55% increase in installed renewable generation capacity in just nine months of 2022. Thus, from 155 MW in 2021 to 208.4 MW in the third quarter of 2022. By islands, Mallorca has installed 191.1 MW of the total 208.4 MW, while Menorca has 7.9 MW, Ibiza 7.9 MW and Formentera 1.9 MW. The evolution of the total renewable power in the Balearic Islands, the sum of self-consumption and generation parks, has increased by 40% in the first nine months of 2022 compared to 2021. Thus, it has gone from 201.1 MW of renewable power (155 MW from farms and 46.1 MW from self-consumption) in 2021, to 284 MW in the third quarter of 2022 (208.5 MW from farms and 74.49 MW from self-consumption).

MELIB grid recharging points

On the other hand, with regard to the evolution of recharging points, it should be noted that the Balearic Islands have more than 930 public access points (adding public and private public access points). Of these, some 724 belong to the MELIB network. By islands, it should be noted that Mallorca has 554 MELIB network recharging points (18 more than in the previous quarter, an increase of 18%), while Menorca has 78 (six more, an increase of 6%), and Ibiza with 70 and Formentera with 24 remain the same. This means that in total there are 927 public access points, nearly 6 % of the total in Spain, according to ANFAC.
