The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, through the Directorate General for Food Sovereignty Policies, has published statistics on the production of quality wines for 2022. While 55,654 hectolitres of wine were produced in 2021, 63,548 hectolitres were produced in 2022, of which 43.5% was red wine, 38.2% was a white wine and 18.3% was rosé wine. The largest increases in production correspond to rosé wine with 27% more and white wine with 21% more. Vi de la Terra de Formentera, with 54.8%, and Vi de la Terra de Mallorca, with 24.8%, are the two quality brands that have increased wine production the most.

In terms of grape production, 8,737 tonnes were produced in 2021, while 10,113 tonnes were produced in 2022, an increase of 15.8%. The average production per hectare was 4,418 kilos, 12.8% higher than in 2021. Although 60.6% of the grapes harvested were black grapes, the most important increase was in white grapes, with 27.7% more than the previous year, a fact that responds to the growing demand for white wines.

The agricultural year began with considerable rainfall in November 2021, which allowed the soil to soak, followed by a frost-free winter and a warm spring with some rainfall (more than 100 litres per m2 in some areas), which favoured a good harvest. The summer was very hot with a 17-day heat wave with maximum temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius and even over 40 degrees Celsius, and minimum temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius. In many areas, the vines suffered from heat and dryness, which limited production and some vineyards used drip irrigation to supplement water loss through evapotranspiration. On the other hand, the low humidity favoured the quality of the grapes, so it was a very healthy grape harvest.

In 2022, 2,009.6 hectares were used to produce grapes for differentiated quality wines, 3.2% more than in 2021. The number of hectares of Vi de la Terra de Mallorca grew by 12.8% and of the DO Pla y Llevant by 3.9%.
