The project amounts to 161,000,000 euros, 80% of which comes from European aid and 20% from its own funds.
The Councillor for the Presidency, Javier de Juan, has highly valued the financial support of Interreg Europe 2022 for the Consell de Mallorca’s proposal submitted through the European Funds Office to the call for proposals of this interregional cooperation programme, co-financed by the European Union.

The project called “Unlocking Green Hydrogen Economy for SMEs in European Regions (UNLOCK)” has obtained funding from Interreg Europe. It is a project on the sustainable economy associated with the local development of SMEs working with green hydrogen. De Juan stressed that the project allows us in the Consell and other regional and local institutions in Europe “to facilitate the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises in local green hydrogen economies, as well as boosting sustainable growth, the competitiveness of SMEs and job creation in the respective regions”.

The councillor explained that the project has a budget of 161,000,000 euros, 80% of which will come from European aid and 20% from the council’s own funds. He also stressed that the Consell de Mallorca is part of this large international consortium with universities and European regions that are developing local economies based on green H2.

Thus, in addition to the Consell de Mallorca, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences of Groningen and the province of Frislan (Netherlands), the Italian National Technological Cluster for Energy and the region of Apulia (Italy), the region of Podkarpackie (Poland), the Intermunicipal Community of Médio Tejo (Portugal), the Västerbotten Region and the municipality of Ånge (Sweden) are also part of this international consortium.) In addition, there are two partners: Centro Regional Coordination and Development Commission (Portugal) and Region Västernorrland (Sweden).

This European project, with a total budget of more than 2,000,000 euros, will start at the beginning of 2023 and will last for four years.

Other green hydrogen projects

The Consell promotes the use of green hydrogen, as the green energy it is and as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. Last June, the island institution presented a project for use as fuel in lorries that transport waste from transfer stations to treatment plants.
