The Councilor for Territorial Planning and Vice President of the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium, Maria Antònia Garcías, the Island Director for Territorial Planning, Miquel Vadell, and two representatives of the Association of Nature Photography of the Balearic Islands (AFONIB), Xavier Llabrés and Joan Pons, presented the Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Photography Contest on Wednesday, organized by the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium and the Balearic Islands Nature Photography Association (AFONIB), which this year is focusing on the new “Serra de Tramuntana” badge, born in 2022 to support the people who, through their daily work, help preserve the Serra de Tramuntana’s cultural landscape.

“The label is an initiative that identifies the products and services produced in the Serra de Tramuntana, to give them additional value, with the aim of counteracting the difficulties caused by the terrain’s orography, which farmers, ranchers, entrepreneurs and residents must face,” Garcías pointed out.

The fifth edition of the competition, organised under the theme “Flavours and experiences”, is looking for the best photographs of the Serra, both of the products produced and of the experiences and heritage elements of this place.

The competition is worth a total of 5,700 euros and is open to all amateur or professional photographers who are the authors of the images they submit and who own the rights to them. Each category consists of a first prize of 800 euros and two honourable prizes of 400 and 200 euros respectively. From among the 12 prizewinners awarded by the jury, there is also a category with a popular jury through social networks, with an extra 100 euros for the winner.

The four categories of the 5th Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Photography Competition, flavours and experiences, are:

  • Products and producers include the entire life cycle: sowing, harvesting, manufacturing, cooking and presentation of the dish.
  • Villages of the Serra de Tramuntana: squares, doorways, façades, corners and details that hide heritage elements.
  • Ethnological heritage, which has made the Sierra a world heritage site: dry stone terraces and hydraulic network.
  • Experiences in the Sierra: popular festivals, cultural visits, excursions, mountaineering, cultural events, etc.

Entry to the competition is free of charge, and the main content of the material submitted must be located within the territory of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The deadline for submitting photographs is Wednesday, January 11 through Tuesday, January 24. Each participant may submit a maximum of three photographs per category, accompanied by a caption or description, without any reference to the authorship of the image. The photographs must be submitted in digital format via the platform serradetramuntana.pixall.es, where the complete rules of the competition can also be consulted.
The decision of the jury, appointed by the Serra de Tramuntana Consortium and AFONIB, will be made public in February 2023. Following the awards ceremony, the winning photographs will form part of the 5th Serra de Tramuntana World Heritage Photography Contest, flavors and experiences, which will tour several municipalities around Mallorca.
