Artesania de Mallorca Awards

This week the Llubí Theatre hosted the 9th edition of the Premis Artesania de Mallorca, which this year has incorporated a new category under the heading of ‘Tradició de Mallorca’, which “aims to guarantee the safeguarding of the knowledge, materials, techniques and products of our island’s traditional crafts so that they can be passed on to future generations and continue to be practised as a means of subsistence and cultural identity”. The winner of this first edition was Antonio Mas Ramis for his work “Eines per fer marjades”. The second prize in this category went to Jordi Carlos Ribas Ros (see attached list of the other winners).

During the awards ceremony the president of the Consell, Catalina Cladera said that “We want to contribute to the promotion of this economic sector, boost it and help the thousand craftsmen and craftswomen of Mallorca to face the challenges, such as digitization, innovation, training, internationalization and dissemination of Product Artesà de Mallorca to contribute to the diversification” said the president Cladera, who has recognized the work and effort of the winners and new artisans and craftsmen. “You are a guarantee of the survival of traditional techniques, but also of innovation and adaptation of these techniques to the aesthetics and functionality of modern times,” she said.

In this sense, the councillor for Economic Promotion and Local Development, Jaume Alzamora, pointed out that the work well done by artisans “contributes to the construction of a fairer, more balanced and sustainable production model”. According to Alzamora, crafts “make visible the ways of consuming and producing that will be decisive in the future” and are an example of a productive activity of proximity that “contributes to strengthening the local economic fabric and energising the life of the municipalities”.

New artisan charters

During the gala, 39 new artisan cards were also awarded. Alzamora explained that with the artisan charters delivered today, the Consell de Mallorca will have already recognised a total of 975 artisans and recalled that since 2019 the aid from the Department of Economic Promotion and Local Development of the Consell de Mallorca has already reached 256 artisans and 14 associations that group together in this sector. In total, 473,000 euros have been used to boost the sector. “You are a key sector and we will continue to dedicate our efforts to guaranteeing the future and your projection as an economic and transformative driving force,” he said.

The councillor Alzamora has pledged to continue supporting artisans and has announced the launch of an advertising campaign encouraging the purchase of local produce. A campaign to promote local products in which artisans will play a leading role. He also announced the imminent approval of the new ROA (Reglament d’Oficis Artesans).
