In the public hospitals of the Balearic Islands
In 2022, the public hospitals of the Balearic Islands generated 153 organs for transplants thanks to the altruism of 54 donors and their families. These figures represent a rate of 46 donors per million inhabitants, the same as the national average. By islands, in 2022 there were 43 organ donors in Mallorca, 7 donors in Ibiza and Formentera and 4 in Menorca.
In the balance of activity in 2022, the Autonomous Transplant Coordination of the Balearic Islands (CATIB) reports that 18 of the 54 donors (i.e. a third) made the donation in asystole, a technique that allows organ donation in cardiorespiratory arrest and that was implemented in public hospitals in the Balearic Islands in 2016 in order to optimise organ donation.
In terms of the number of organs generated, 100 were kidneys, 31 were livers, 10 were lungs, 8 were hearts and 4 were pancreas. Seventy kidney transplants and seven liver transplants were performed at Son Espases University Hospital on patients from the Balearic Islands. Of the total number of transplants, 63 were carried out on patients from Mallorca, 9 from Ibiza and 5 from Menorca.
On the other hand, there were 38 resident patients who received a transplant outside the Balearic Islands: 11 kidney transplants in Catalonia, Madrid and the Canary Islands; 10 liver transplants in Catalonia; 5 heart transplants in Catalonia and Madrid; 15 lung transplants in Catalonia and Valencia, and 2 pancreas transplants in Catalonia.
With regard to tissue donation, last year there were 68 cornea donors and 17 osteotendinous tissue donors.
