4,500 people who are retired or over 65 will be able to enjoy activities that promote active ageing during their stay.

The Consell de Mallorca, through the Mallorca Turisme Foundation, is once again launching the Disfruta la Isla senior (Enjoy the senior island) subsidy scheme. The main aim of this third edition is to encourage the free time of the elderly and also, through sporting activities, active ageing.

Senior vouchers return

The president of the Consell, Catalina Cladera, stressed that “the Disfruta la Isla programme was born during the pandemic to reactivate tourism in the face of the difficult tourist season. Now, it has evolved into Disfruta la Isla senior, designed to promote active ageing and, therefore, the health of the elderly”. “We are pleased to be able to consolidate this programme, which has been transformed according to the needs of the moment,” concluded the president.

Thus, the Fundació Mallorca Turisme will distribute 2,250 vouchers for two people, redeemable for a two-night, three-day half-board stay in a hotel in Mallorca, between the 10th and 30th of March. In total, 13,500 people will have benefited from this programme since its inception.

The stays will begin on Tuesday mornings and will end on Thursday lunchtime, except for the first week, when the arrival is on Friday and the departure is on Sunday. All of them will include sports and active tourism activities for the beneficiaries, who must be over 65 or retired.

The stays will be divided into four batches:

1st week: 10 to 12 March

2nd week: 14 to 16 March

3rd week: 21 to 23 March

4th week: 28th to 30th March

The Minister of Transition, Tourism and Sports, Andreu Serra, explained that “if the Fundació Mallorca Turisme receives more registrations than vouchers available, a draw will be made in front of a notary”. He added that “in this third edition we are offering weekend stays for the first time, in order to be able to reconcile this with family life”.

The beneficiaries of the voucher will have to pay 50 euros for this stay (with snacks and dinner included) and the activities that take place, as the Fundació Mallorca Turisme subsidises the remaining 200 euros of the value of the stay. Therefore, the budget of the call is 450,000 euros and will cover the cost of 2,250 double rooms in hotels of at least 3 stars.

As established in the call for proposals, 8 hotels will participate, from four different areas of the island: Palma, the Tramuntana and Raiguer mountains, Pla i Llevant, and Migjorn. Each one will offer some 560 stays during the entire period of this “Enjoy the island”.

People who want to apply for one of these vouchers must register by 10 February. They must be residents of Mallorca, be retired (or partially retired) or be over 65 years of age.
