Digital Classrooms

With a budget of 18 million euros, 4,750 interactive digital screens, 5,520 laptops and 750 document cameras will be purchased.

The implementation will be carried out progressively until it reaches more than 350 schools in the Balearic Islands.

This week the company that supplies the digital panels for the classrooms, SMART, visited Mallorca to kick off the project.

The Director General of Early Childhood, Innovation and Educational Community, Amanda Fernández, accompanied by the Head of the Educational Information Technology Service, Yolanda Martínez, and her team, this week received the Vice President of the company that supplies the digital classroom panels (SMART), Jeff Lowe, to give the starting point for the “Digital Classrooms” project.

The Department of Education and Vocational Training is launching this project with a budget of 18 million euros to acquire 4,750 interactive digital screens, 5,520 laptops and 750 document cameras plus technical training for more than 350 schools. This programme will complement the 750 digital screens that schools in the Balearic Islands already have.

A pilot installation and training test is scheduled to begin in one secondary school and one primary school in the second half of February. The deployment of the classrooms will begin during the month of March and the rate of installation is 2-3 days per primary school and 1 week in secondary schools, depending on the volume of classrooms.

Installation and specific training for more than 350 schools in the Balearic Islands

The implementation will be done progressively, in 4 months 30% of the classrooms will be installed, in 10 months 70% and in 16 months 100%.

Once installed in the centre, training will be given to the entire teaching staff within a maximum period of one more month.

The visit of the SMART company marks the starting point of the project, while initiating a process of collaboration for, among others, the implementation of the LUMIO Ambassadors Project for the creation of collaborative digital resources, Classroom of the Future and collaborative projects with schools of the Government of Canada.

This project is made possible thanks to funding from the European Union-NextGeneration and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
