24 DO and PGI wineries from the Balearic Islands

Wines with quality labels from the Balearic Islands are increasingly recognised and valued, both internally and externally. This was evident at the Barcelona Wine Week fair, one of Spain’s leading wine sector fairs, which was attended by more wineries from the Islands than ever before, 24 in total: 18 from Mallorca, four from Menorca, one from Eivissa and one from Formentera. Wines from DO Binissalem, DO Pla i Llevant, Vino de la Tierra de Mallorca, Vino de la Tierra de Menorca, Vino de la Tierra de Eivissa and Vino de la Tierra Formentera were represented. All of them have shared a common stand organised in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, as was the case last year.

The fair, which kicked off on Monday, 6 February, and will run until Wednesday, 8 February, was visited by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, who visited the Balearic Islands stand along with the director general of Food Sovereignty Policies, Aram Ortega. According to the director general, who is present at the fair to accompany and support the wineries, “the presence of more wineries than ever before and the good figures for 2022 indicate that this sector has a bright future and that we are heading in the right direction”. Pilar Pons, Director of Economy of the Consell de Menorca, also visited the Consell de Menorca’s stand.

In recent years, the Balearic Islands’ wine sector has gained a great deal of recognition both internally and externally, partly due to the promotion it has received from the tourism and catering sectors. “Although we still do not know the marketing figures for 2022, the sensations are very good and point to a record year, as has happened with the production figures,” Ortega pointed out. In 2022, 63,548 hectolitres of wine were produced, 14.2% more than in 2021, and grape production also increased by 15.8% compared to 2021. The marketing of quality wines increased by 36% in 2021, compared to 2020, and thus recovered the figures prior to the pandemic.

The Mallorcan wineries that attended the fair were: Can Verdura, Can Fumat, José L. Ferrer, Binigual, Pere Seda, Bordoy, Miquel Gelabert, Miquel Oliver, Binigrau, Butxet, Blanca Tierra, Mortitx, Oliver Moragues, Ava Vios, Son Vich de Superna, Dalt Turó, Ses Talaioles and Can Axartell; from Menorca, Son Cremat, Sa Forana, Morvedra and Torralbenc; from Ibiza, Ojo de Ibiza; and from Formentera, Terramo.
