I also want to be a scientist

The jury of the school competition “I also want to be a scientist” has decided that the winners of the third edition of the contest are the CEIP Mestre Pere Garau (category of 3rd to 6th-grade primary) and the IES La Ribera (category of secondary, baccalaureate and vocational training).

Organised by the Department of Education and Vocational Training, through the CEPA IBSTEAM and with the collaboration of Convivèxit, IBDona, Casio División Educativa, ICONO, Plataforma 11F, and the UIB doctors Alicia Sintes (Physics) and Mar Leza (Biology), this initiative aims to commemorate 11F, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The aim of this competition is to make visible the role that women have played in science throughout history and, in this way, to have references for girls to encourage them to choose careers in the scientific field.

This school video competition asked participants to produce an advert aimed at raising awareness of the role of women in scientific and technical fields, with a maximum duration of 90 seconds, original and of their own authorship.

Successful call for entries with more than 100 videos submitted

A total of 115 videos were sent in, with 322 students from 22 schools in the Balearic Islands working on them. The participants opted for a wide variety of formats and styles, emphasising the biographies of great figures such as Marie Curie, Rosalind Franklin, Hedy Lamarr, Katherine Johnson and Ada Lovelace.

The winning video in the 3rd to 6th-grade primary school category was presented by Marc Ruiz Navarro and Salvador Barceló Barceló from 6th grade at CEIP Mestre Pere Garau (Son Macià) https://youtu.be/dj9fijezimq.

And in the secondary, baccalaureate and vocational training category, the video presented by Joana Bustamante Gómez, Mario Aftenie Zenoveiov and Taya Schulzke from 4th ESO at IES La Ribera (Playa de Palma) https://youtu.be/xsfvp0nekzi won.
