The project, part of the torrent cleaning and maintenance project being carried out by the Directorate General of Water Resources, has been completed.

The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, together with the Councillor for the Environment and Territory, Miquel Mir, and the Director General of Water Resources, Joana Garau, visited the Siurana torrent, which flows into the S’Albufera Natural Park, where almost 4 kilometres of torrent maintenance work has been carried out, of which 895 metres belong to the Natural Park.

President Francina Armengol highlighted the environmental importance of s’Albufera, as well as the work carried out by the Government to protect the wetlands. “Keeping them in good condition is one of the most powerful actions against climate change. It is an international recommendation of which the Balearic Islands is a benchmark with the approval of the Strategic Plan for Wetlands”.

The aim of the environmental restoration of the Siurana torrent is to eliminate the reed (Arundo donax), an invasive species that could affect the recovery of the plant and riverbank cover. To do this, a leading treatment that began in the Albufera de València has been implemented, which consists of removing the reed, extracting the rhizomes and placing a cloth to prevent the rhizome from growing again.

The councillor for the Environment and Territory, Miquel Mir, was pleased that the Valencian experience “serves to preserve an area as emblematic as s’Albufera de Mallorca and to improve the water supply, as well as to recover the riparian forests typical of the area”.
The work on the section of the Siurana torrent, the last to be adapted so that the water from the San Miquel torrent flows into s’Albufera, has had a budget of 56,785.3 €.

The environmental restoration project has been carried out following the criteria established in the environmental clauses of the torrent maintenance contract to minimise the effects on the area’s biodiversity.
