The membership process will open between 20 February and 31 March and will prioritise vulnerable households.

Some 64 households and 8 companies in Es Mercadal (Menorca) will be able to reduce their electricity bills thanks to the shared self-consumption that the Balearic Energy Institute (IBE) will set up in an apartment building belonging to the Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) located at Ronda de Ses Costes, 20.

Reduce their electricity bills

The IBE, an entity dependent on the Vice-Presidency and Regional Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, headed by Juan Pedro Yllanes, presented the project to the residents of Es Mercadal on Monday. Once it is up and running, it will allow homes and businesses within a two-kilometre radius of the installation to be powered by the energy generated by solar panels. Thus, users who can benefit will pay per kilowatt at cost price and zero kilometres.

The Director General of Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, said during the presentation that “we continue working to make Menorca the first island to be a 100% sustainable and decarbonised space. And we do it together with the democratisation of energy. Thanks to this self-consumption, several homes and businesses will have access to clean and cheap energy and will take another step in the process of decarbonisation of the island. We hope that there will be a lot of demand to continue building this network of shared self-consumption that IBE has set up on the islands.

He also informed that the public registration procedure will be open between 20 February and 31 March 2023, and “will allow the selection of individuals and companies that will be able to consume the electricity from the photovoltaic installation for a period of one year, extendable up to four, at which time a new call for applications will be opened. In addition, we will work with the Social Services Department of the City Council so that families from vulnerable groups can benefit from the social advantages of this project”.

The project

With the shared self-consumption installed in a residential building of the Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI), located at Ronda de Ses Costes, 20, it will be possible to save up to 62.83 tonnes of CO2/year.

The project, located on the roof of an IBAVI housing building, will have a total power of 88 kW that can supply a total of 64 homes and 8 businesses, thus providing green energy at cost price to residents of Es Mercadal, with priority for vulnerable households. Both the installation and its maintenance will be carried out by IBE, so the residents will not have to assume any extra costs.

This project joins two others that are also being developed in Menorca, specifically in Ciutadella and Ferreries. In the case of Ciutadella, the project located in the VPP of the street of La Ciutat d’Oristano, 20, will add 22 kW that can supply up to 32 homes and 4 businesses in the municipality, in addition, to stop emitting up to 15.36 tons of CO2 per year. In the case of Ferreries, the project is located at VPP Son Morera and its commissioning will add 18.7 kW that will supply electricity to 26 homes and 5 businesses, which will also stop emitting 12.57 tons of CO2/year. The three projects are currently in the construction phase.
