Palma’s Teatre Principal has presented the show Loopera, a big party that fuses opera with electronic music and with which the historic theatre wants to bid farewell to the season and present the 38 Temporada de Ópera (38th Opera Season).

Loopera, which will be performed on the 8th and 9th of July, is a show directed by Joan Fullana and Joan Vila and features the performance of the actor Josep Orfila and the lyric soloists Jorge Tello, Maria del Mar Vives, Roger Berenguer and Celia Cuéllar, as well as the Teatre Principal Youth Choir.

In the words of the director of the Teatre Principal, Josep R. Cerdà, with Loopera “we want to break with the image of opera as an elitist spectacle”. Cerdà explained that Loopera was the show with which the current management team began their work, and that is why they wanted to close the cycle with the same production.

Joan Fullana defined Loopera as “a celebration of the union between lyrical music and electronic music, between cultural music and the most popular, a technological orgy, an invocation of Eros and Thanatos, which are the drives that move the great operas, love and death”.

For the occasion, the Sala Gran of the Teatre Principal has been arranged differently, with part of the audience following the performance from the boxes and another part from the stage, where they can dance. Meanwhile, in the stalls, a large ramp will be set up to join it to the stage, so that the whole space will be ready for the show.

In addition, Josep R. Cerdà, director of Palma’s Teatre Principal, has previewed the 38th Opera Season. It will begin with Il trittico, by Giacomo Puccini, which includes three short pieces (Suor Angeliza, Gianni Schichi and Il tabarro), with two performances on the 24th and 26th of November. This is a new production of the Teatre Principal, with stage direction by Rafel Duran and musical direction by Anna Hartman. Among the participating soloists are Veronica Granatiero, Marga Cloquell, Marisa Roca, Catina Bibiloni and Begoña Gómez, among others.

Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino will be performed on 28 February, 1 March and 3 March 2024. Some of the confirmed soloists are Annalisa Stroppa, Simón Orfila, Antoni Marsol, Vega Escribano, Jordi Fontana and Sebastià Serra.

The next event will be the traditional Concert de Pasqua, with a guest orchestra and the Cor del Teatre Principal on March 24th.

Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, a small-scale opera produced by the ABAO, will be performed on the 5th and 6th of April.

And the 38th Opera Season will end with Ròmeo te Juliette, by Charles Gounod, in a production that will come from the Opéra Comique de Paris with scenography by the Comédia Française. It will be performed by Marta Bauzá, Pablo López and Tomeu Bibiloni, among others.

The images of the operas have also been unveiled, which are installed on canvases at the doors of the Teatro Principal, and are photographs created by Lídia Vives.
