The president pledges to be “a president for everyone” and “of the four islands, aware of our plural and diverse reality”.

President-elect Marga Prohens was sworn in today as president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, with a commitment to “work to make the change that citizens have asked for a reality” and to be “a president for everyone” and “of the four islands, aware of our reality, plural and diverse, always respectful of the will of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera”.

This is how Prohens expressed herself in her first words after taking the oath of office at the institutional ceremony held at the Llotja de Palma, which was attended by 715 guests including authorities, representatives of the economic sectors, social agents, the third sector and civil society organisations, and during which the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands (OSIB) and the Mallorcan singer-songwriter Jaume Anglada performed.

In her brief speech, the President of the Government pointed out that she has taken on this responsibility as a result of the will of the people in the regional elections of 28 May and after having obtained the confidence of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. “A confidence that I have received by keeping my word to all citizens to govern alone and to be able to fully comply with my government programme”, he stressed.

“I assume this responsibility aware of its full dimension, aware of the task of responding to the challenges, to the historical problems and to the yearnings for a future of opportunities and well-being in this land”, said Prohens, while reiterating her confidence in the islands.

“I believe in the capacity and talent of its people. I believe in all the potential of these islands. And therefore, it is only a question of allowing it to flourish, of accompanying it, of creating the necessary conditions to bring out the best of what we can offer as a society”, said President Prohens.

“Yes, I believe with conviction in this land. I believe in its talent. I believe in freedom. I believe in the opportunities it can generate. I believe in an open and inclusive society. I believe that no family should have to pay for a lifetime of effort by their own. And I believe that insularity is a fact to be compensated for”, she said.

Prohens also stressed that she was “proud” to assume the presidency as a woman, “aware that the role of women in politics has not always been easy” and “even more so when taking over from another woman”, she said.

“I will stand up for this land, for its people, and I want to put the best men and women at its service. I will work with all of you, with the whole of society”, she concluded.
