The Government Delegation against Gender Violence
The Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, has updated the statistical data regarding women murdered presumably due to gender violence in the partner and/or ex-partner after the last meeting with the Observatory of Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary, the Prosecutor’s Office for Violence against Women and the Ministry of the Interior, held on July 7.
To advance in the homogenization of figures in the different official statistics, cases from 2014, 2015, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023 have been analyzed.
After the sharing of the work carried out, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence excludes in 2014 a case in A Coruña which had previously been confirmed, after the conviction for threats, and confirms another one as a corpse was found in 2023 of a woman murdered in 2014 in the province of Malaga. The total count, therefore, does not vary in 2014: 55 women murdered presumably due to gender violence in the partner and/or ex-partner.
In 2015, one case that was confirmed in Pontevedra is excluded, following the verdict of not guilty without appeal. Therefore, the number of women allegedly murdered in 2015 is 59 instead of 60.
With respect to 2017, a case that had previously been confirmed in Valencia is excluded, following the sentence issued in this regard for a crime of injury (not homicide). The number of women allegedly murdered is 49 instead of 50.
As for 2021, a case in Madrid that was under investigation following a conviction for reckless homicide is excluded. Therefore, the number of women presumed murdered due to gender violence remains at 49, although the number of cases under investigation increases to 1 instead of 2.
On the other hand, in 2022, a case previously confirmed in Asturias was transferred to investigation, since the aggressor was no longer charged with homicide. The procedure is still under investigation and the legal qualification is not definitive. The victim had a minor daughter and a minor son who are excluded, for the moment, from the official count of orphans due to gender violence in the partner and/or ex-partner. With this new update, there would be 49 women murdered presumably due to gender violence (previously 50), and the number of minors orphaned by gender violence is 36 instead of 38.
Finally, in 2023, the case of a woman in Barcelona about whom the Government Delegation against Gender Violence had no information is included in the investigation and a minor orphan is included for the presumed murder due to gender violence in the province of Huelva. The number of murdered women would be 54 and the number of orphaned minors would be 56 (previously 55). There are two cases under investigation (one more than to date).
With the update of this data, the number of women killed by gender violence in the context of intimate partner and/or ex-partner from 2003 until December 1, 2023, would be 1,236 and the number of cases under investigation would be 22. Likewise, the number of orphaned or orphaned minors from 2013 to the present day would be 431.
