The Board of Trustees of the Es Baluard Foundation
The meeting was attended, among others, by the president of the Government and the Board of Trustees of the Es Baluard Foundation, Marga Prohens, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzà, the Minister of Presidency and Public Administration, Antònia M. Estarellas and the regional secretary of Culture and Sports, Pedro Vidal, as well as representatives of the Consell de Mallorca, Palma City Council and Serra Art Foundation.
Prohens has highlighted “the illusion shown by the Board of Trustees” that around the 20th anniversary “must start a new era in the reference museum of contemporary art throughout the Mediterranean”. “Our goal is to bring es Baluard back to all citizens, to make them feel it is theirs,” he remarked.
A total of 10 projects of own production make up the program of exhibitions that will be developed throughout 2024 at the headquarters of es Baluard Museu, much of it linked to the Balearic art-historical historiography.
The museum’s collection, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary, will be the subject of a first reading around the various artistic currents developed from the late nineteenth century to the present. In addition, the Mallorcan artist Tonina Matamalas will propose an artistic intervention on the building based on an approach to the historical context of the location of the Museum itself, the Renaissance wall, and its evolution.
In relation to the collection and starting in June, Carles Guerra will continue his research on artistic practices defined from the context of health, questioning the definition of “norm”.
The Balearic Islands will be reflected from different research perspectives in the following four exhibition projects: the exhibition on the figure of Katja Meiroswky, a painter linked to the Ibiza 59 Group; the exhibition on the presence of the theorist and philosopher Walter Benjamin on the island in 1932 and 1933 by the artist Gonzalo Elvira (Patagonia, Argentina, 1971); AIDS and its reflection in artistic creation in the Balearic context from the 1980s to the present will be the subject of the research work of Jesús Alcaide and, finally, Lluís Vecina Rufiandis (Mallorca, 1995) and his installation from which he will reflect on the relationship between the tourist phenomenon and historical memory on the island of Mallorca, with the beach of sa Coma in particular.
The program will include solo exhibitions of three contemporary artists, Ana Laura Aláez and Bel Fullana -both linked to Mallorca-, and Kimsooja, an international artist: Ana Laura Aláez (Bilbao, 1964), a renowned multidisciplinary artist who has been living on the island since 2010, will present a new work linked to Mallorca. Bel Fullana (Son Carrió, 1985) will exhibit individually for the first time in es Baluard with the realization of a specific sculptural project as a turning point in her artistic career linked to painting. Kimsooja (Taegu, South Korea, 1957), a prominent artist of Korean origin, will be the subject of a review of her artistic career in what will be her first institutional exhibition in the Balearic Islands.
The Museum will continue to work with educational centres, families, children, young people, the elderly, and social groups…, making the Museum a place for learning, research and enjoyment, increasingly accessible, sustainable and supportive, as it could not be otherwise. The Museum’s 20th anniversary will have special relevance, offering a wide range of proposals aimed at all ages and profiles, to include and share this year of celebration with all citizens. In addition, a program of free guided visits to the Museum’s Collection and its spaces will be launched.
