Launched the participatory process to change the date of the Diada
28 town councils in Mallorca, representing 80% of the island’s population, have come out in favour of the Mallorca Council’s proposal to establish 12 September as the Diada. On 30 October, the president of the island institution, Llorenç Galmés, issued a proposal justifying the recovery of 12 September as the Day of Mallorca, as it had been for 20 years. Likewise, the councillor of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, resolved to initiate the proceedings. This resolution was notified on 31 October to all the town councils to gather their institutional opinion and for them to give their opinion on the proposal within twenty days.
In total, responses were received from the mayors of 30 town councils within the given deadline. Of these, 28 have responded favourably: Alaró, Alcudia, Andratx, Binissalem, Bunyola, Calvià, Campos, Escorca, Estellencs, Felanitx, Fornalutx, Llucmajor, Mancor del Valle, María de la Salud, Marratxí, Muro, Palma, Petra, San Lorenzo, Santa Margalida, Santanyí, Selva, Ses Salines, Sineu, Sóller, Son Servera, Valldemossa and Vilafranca.
On the other hand, the bat of Santa Eugenia expressed his disagreement with the proposal and was in favour of keeping the Diada on 31 December. For her part, the mayoress of Banyalbufar has requested the creation of a working commission, since she does not have specialised technical staff.
Endorsement by experts
On the other hand, the Mallorca Council has requested three reports from experts in the field of Mallorca’s history on the suitability of establishing the Diada on the 12th of September in the historical, legal and sociological context. All three conclude that the 12th of September is the most suitable date to celebrate the Day of Mallorca.
These experts were:
Antonio Cañellas Mas, assistant professor Doctor of University accredited by the National Agency for Quality Assessment (ANECA) of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Graduate in History from the UIB, with doctoral studies at the University of Alcalá de Henares and Navarra, researcher of the Political History of Contemporary Spain Group.
Antonio Ortega Villoslada, Doctor in Medieval History from the Universidad de Educación a Distancia, full member of the Real Academia Mallorquina de Estudios Históricos, Genealogicos y Heráldicos, and member of the Sociedad Arqueológica Luliana.
Román Piña Homs, jurist and historian, Professor of History of Law at the UIB, professor emeritus and president of the Royal Mallorcan Academy of Genealogical, Heraldic and Historical Studies. He was also awarded the Ramon Llull Prize in 2004 and the Gold Medal of the Balearic Islands in 2005.
Once the response from the town councils and the expert reports have been received, the Consell de Mallorca is expected to give the go-ahead for provisional approval to establish the 12th of September as the Diada de Mallorca at its plenary session on the 14th of December. The dossier also includes a report from the technical services and a favourable legal report from the legal services of the Department of the Presidency.
