The vice-president and councillor for Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Juan Pedro Yllanes, has taken stock of the situation of the business installers sector in the Balearic Islands and has reported that the number of authorised companies in the sector has grown by 18.6 % since 2018 and that according to data provided by ASINEM, due to the increase in activity, 37 % of companies in the sector on the Islands have had to increase their workforce in 2022.

Together with the director-general of Energy Transition and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, and the president and vice-president of ASINEM, Javier Piña and Neus Sastre respectively, the Govern also highlighted the fact that the future of the energy transition involves electrification and the need to value training in the sector. According to the register of companies of Industry provided by ASINEM, from 2018 to 2022 the number of authorised companies in the installations sector has grown by 18.6%. Furthermore, taking into account Impulsa data, in 2019 this sector moved around 561 million euros in electrical installations, plumbing and other installations (data corresponding to CNAE GROUP F – heading 43.2).

In the words of Vice-President Yllanes, “we are seeing how the installer sector is experiencing a major boost. As a result, 37% of companies have had to increase the workforce in 2022, according to the data from ASINEM’s 2022 strategic survey. With these data, it is worth highlighting the fact that jobs are not only being created in new productive sectors related to energy and industry but that these are of quality, qualified and stable. We are taking steps towards the diversification of the Balearic Islands’ production model, a necessary diversification which, in the case of the energy transition, is in a process of constant increase that we hope will continue over time. The energy transition can spearhead the creation of stable, quality jobs that help to diversify the production model of the Balearic Islands, which is why I would like to remind you that before the end of the year the Balearic Islands Energy Transition Investment Plan will be up and running, with 233 million public euros, which will mobilise more than 630 million private euros and create a minimum of 7,000 direct jobs”.

Yllanes also indicated that since 2018, a series of calls have been launched for actions aimed at energy installations, efficiency improvements and electric mobility worth more than 77 million euros (137 million euros, if we count the SOLBAL I and SOLBAL II programmes). “These public subsidies have had a very positive impact on the sector due to their incentive nature for private investment to carry out these actions. Therefore, the actions in terms of transition and energy efficiency have an economic impact, advancing in the diversification of the productive model through new sectors that offer stable and quality workplaces”, said the vice-president.

The president of ASINEM, Javier Piña, stated that “without installers, the energy transition cannot be guaranteed. We need training and investment. We need to be visionaries in order to train and invest. We need campaigns to change the way we see and value the installation profession, without forgetting that we are leaving behind 50% of the female population. If we are not able to meet this demand, the market will take care of it without guarantees”.

For his part, the Director-General of Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, stressed the “importance of increasing the number of installers with a professional profile. The Government stresses the importance of the sector of installers and installers on the Islands, a sector that will continue to generate jobs, given that the energy transition will not be a one-off issue and that it has an important role to play in the process of changing the production model”.

Other data

It should be noted that, according to Impulsa data provided to ASINEM, the installers sector represents 1.8% of the gross added value of the Balearic Islands in 2019, 2.6% of the workers and 2.7% of the companies. Currently, the sector is in a very dynamic situation with a great perspective of improvement and positioning itself as one of the sectors that will grow the most in the coming years”.

It should also be noted that in the first quarter of the year, the same amount of self-consumption power was installed in the Balearic Islands as in the whole of 2021, a fact made possible thanks to the calls for aid that the Government has in place. On this point, Yllanes recalled that “the Government has asked the State Government for a credit extension of more than 20 million euros to meet the more than 5,500 applications that will allow us to install more than 60 MW of self-consumption, which represents more than what we currently have installed”.
