This year, under the title “Economy for equality. The feminist agenda”, the aim is to bring the economy closer to women and, at the same time, to ensure that the economy takes women’s needs and values into account. Topics such as the gender perspective in labour reform, the analysis of the wage gap, the knowledge economy, the effects of digitalisation on women or co-responsibility and work-life balance, among others, will be discussed.

The conference will take place from 8 to 10 September, and will include the participation of representatives from various areas of feminism or who stand out for their activism in both the social and academic spheres in the struggle to achieve equality between women and men. Speakers will include the philosopher Ana de Miguel, the doctor of economics and European expert Carmen Castro, the emeritus professor Cecilia Castaño, the journalist Montse Boix, and the president of the Young Women’s Federation, Ada Santana.

The Aulas Feministas of Ibiza and Formentera was born in 2020 as a space for reflection on feminism and its transformative power. The image that represents the poster for the conference refers to two key women in the history of feminism. On the one hand, Olympe de Gouges, who in the midst of the French Revolution, in 1791, wrote the first Declaration of the rights of women and citizens, and, on the other, Mary Wollstonecraft, who a year later wrote the Vindication of the rights of women.

During the presentation, Maria Duran stressed that “in these times of uncertainty, we need more than ever to ensure that women occupy a critical mass within the economy”, and, therefore, “at least 35% of businesswomen should be in senior and middle management positions”.

On the other hand, Ana Juan wanted to stress that the Feminist Classrooms “are a framework for debate and a very necessary loudspeaker for women in our society and we have to continue with initiatives such as these”. Ana Juan also stressed that “the great social advances that we women have experienced in gender equality in recent years with progressive policies must also be transferred to the workplace because there is still a long way to go to break the wage gap”.

Carolina Escandell expressed her gratitude for all the work carried out by IBDONA and also for the collaboration with the Consell Insular de Eivissa in organising this conference, and stressed the importance of promoting actions for the benefit of women.

Rafa Ruiz has also thanked the involvement of IBDONA and its director with the Pitiusas Islands for organising this conference in Can Ventosa. The mayor of Eivissa has pointed out that “it is key to continue advancing in the labour field towards real equality. We have to open our eyes or put on our purple glasses to see that inequality exists in all areas, also in the economy and at work”.

The Aulas will begin next Thursday, 8 September, at the Can Ventosa Cultural Space, with a round table discussion on labour reform from a gender perspective, with the participation of Iago Negueruela, Catalan Minister of Economic Model, Tourism and Labour; Francisca Garí, secretary of Social Policies and Equality of the UGT Balearic Islands; Eva Cerdeiriña, secretary of Public Policies and Labour Health of the CCOO Balearic Islands; Dolores Fernández, president of Espacio Das Formentera, and Mariví Mengual, president of the Association of Progressive Women of Ibiza.

The day will end with the presentation of the studies “Sexual violence without memory in the Balearic Islands”, and “Study of the judicial treatment given to women and their minor children in family proceedings in which the existence of gender violence is established 2021”.
