Triumphal arch
The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained that ‘this is one of the most notorious actions that the island institution is carrying out this year to bring the celebration of the year of Saint Catalina Tomàs closer to the citizens’. It should be remembered that the Consell de Mallorca began the celebration of this event in March, when Pope Francis received a delegation from Mallorca in the audience at the Vatican.
Roca detailed that ‘it is a spectacular monument six metres high and six metres wide that will be placed in the centre of the city for three months: until the 20th of October, once the cavalcade of the triumphal carriage of Saint Catalina Tomàs de Palma is over’. The arch was designed by Giovanni Lonardo and created by the cabinetmakers and builders Miquel Suau and Tomeu Reus, and is inspired by the arch erected in 1930 in Santa Magdalena square.
The inauguration ceremony will take place on Saturday 20th July at 7.30 p.m., in an event that will combine festivities and tradition with a small procession that will go from the cloister of Santa Magdalena to the triumphal arch, which will be located in the centre of the Rambla. The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the vice-president and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, will take part in the procession, along with different authorities, musicians and dancers.
In this way, the Consell de Mallorca encourages all Mallorcans and visitors to learn a little more about the life of the only Mallorcan saint. All those who come to the great monument will be able to learn about the eight essential events in the life of the saint, such as her birth (1 May 1553); her entry into the cloister (13 November 1552); her monastic profession (24 August 1555); her death (5 April 1555); her death (5 April 1555); her death (5 April 1555); her death (5 April 1555); and her death (5 April 1555); her death (5 April 1574); the beginning of her cause (15 October 1625); her beatification (12 August 1792); her canonisation (22 June 1930) and the 450th anniversary of the saint’s passing (5 April 2024).
