The Balearic Islands will be taking part in the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) to be held in Madrid from 22nd to 26th January. The aim is to position itself in the national market as a tourist destination committed to sustainability.

The Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB) has been in charge of coordinating the entire participation in this fair. The Balearic Islands will be present at this event with a new stand, fully accessible and with a surface area of 1,000 m2, whose space has been financed with funds from the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – Next Generation.

The new Balearic Islands stand at Fitur is an invitation to reflect on the use and care of natural resources and is inspired by water and its ecosystems. It is a design that emerged from a previous ideas competition organised by the AETIB in 2024 and which has served as the basis for the final project.

With a firm commitment to sustainability, both in its materials and in the entire construction process, the new stand also seeks to be a functional and useful space for all the trade fair activity that takes place there. To this end, different spaces have been distributed for each of the islands, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, as well as a large central agora that serves as a meeting point. There are also rooms and spaces for meetings, a closed presentation room, a press room, and even a specific area for activities related to gastronomy and local produce.

Along with each of the islands, 12 local councils from Mallorca and 8 from Menorca will be present at the Balearic Islands stand at FITUR, as well as a total of 12 private co-exhibitors (Roig Drive Mallorca, Affiliated, Menorca Lines, Bookingcore SL, Uroplayas Global Travel Partner, Timón Hotel, Nagarro, My Transfers, Eulen, Cityexperience, Entertainment Spain and Quohotel). There will also be five radio booths from which different local radio stations will broadcast their programmes live on those days.

So that the tourism sector attending the fair can hold work meetings in an organised manner, the AETIB has set up a table reservation system at the stand. This system has been previously communicated to the tourism companies so that they can use it to schedule their appointments.

In addition, as part of its commitment to training as a fundamental part of its tourism strategy, the Balearic Islands stand at Fitur will also offer a coffee and cocktail service at certain times of the day, which will be run by students from the Balearic Islands Hotel and Catering School (EHIB).

Gastronomy and tourism

For the first time, the Balearic Islands stand, under the coordination of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, will have a food and wine area dedicated to the promotion of local produce as a fundamental element of tourism promotion.

A total of 25 showcookings will take place, each one dedicated to a different local product. The chefs will prepare a dish to be tasted accompanied by a local wine. Each of the days is dedicated to a different island: on the 22nd of January it will be dedicated to Ibiza and Formentera, on the 24th to Menorca, and on the 23rd, 25th and 26th to Mallorca. The chefs responsible for the tastings will be Óscar Molina (for Ibiza and Formentera), Patrick James (for Menorca), Miquel Calent, Ariadna Salvador and Borja Triñanes (for Mallorca). The paired wines will be from the IGP Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca, as well as the DOP Binissalem and Pla i Llevant.

In addition, on 22, 23 and 24 January, cocktails made with Mallorcan herbs, herbs from Eivissa, and gin from Maó and Palo de Mallorca will also be served. The cocktails will be prepared by the teaching staff and students of the Escuela de Hostelería de las Illes Balears (School of Hotel and Catering of the Balearic Islands).

Activities at the stand

During the days of the fair, different presentations and activities will be held at the Balearic Islands stand.

On Wednesday 22nd January, at noon, the President of the Government, Margalida Prohens, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Jaume Bauzà, will present to the media the process of transformation for the sustainability of the Balearic Islands and how a new tourism model is being promoted.

On the same day, other general directorates of the Government of the Balearic Islands and Palma City Council will also be making presentations.

On Thursday and Friday the 23rd and 24th of January, presentations will be given by the island councils of Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera, as well as by different municipalities on the islands, which will present their main tourism innovations for the year 2025.

In addition, during all the days of the fair, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment has organised, in a space specially set up for this purpose, workshops/tastings of local produce by different chefs from the islands, which are by reservation only and are aimed at promoting local produce and highlighting the PDOs and PGIs of the Balearic Islands.

All the presentations that take place at the Balearic Islands stand will be streamed on the Balearic Islands Tourism Youtube channel: @TurismoIslasBaleares.

During the weekend, the final days of public access to the fair, different activities are scheduled, such as painting workshops and gastronomic tastings, among others.

By participating in Fitur, the Balearic Islands are reinforcing their image in the Spanish market as a tourist destination that is committed to sustainability, culture and care for its natural environment, highlighting the richness and authenticity of its local produce.
