The participation of wineries from the Balearic Islands in Barcelona Wine Week has increased by almost 40%, with a total of 33 wineries

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, attended the inauguration of one of the most important wine fairs in Spain, the Barcelona Wine Week (BWW), which began today and will end on Wednesday, 5 February. The event will once again feature wines with quality brands from the Balearic Islands, which year after year increase in prestige and demand in both national and international markets. Compared to the 2024 edition, this year the participation of wineries with wines with protected designation of origin (PDO) or protected geographical indication (PGI) Illes Balears has increased by 37.5%, with the presence of 32 wineries and the Associació de Productors de Vi de Menorca (Association of Wine Producers of Menorca). All the wineries of the archipelago will share a common space, which has been organised by the Directorate-General for Agri-food Quality and Local Produce. In addition, the Regional Ministry is financing practically the entire cost of the stands (90%).

Simonet wanted to show its support for all the wineries from the Balearic Islands that are taking part in this event: 28 from Mallorca, three from Menorca and two from Ibiza. Wines from the protected designations of origin Binissalem (4) and Pla i Llevant (5), Vi de la Terra Mallorca (19), Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca (3) and Vi de la Terra Eivissa (2) are represented. In this sense, the councillor pointed out that ‘Barcelona Wine Week is one of the most interesting wine fairs for our winemakers, as it helps them to improve their commercial projection, both nationally and internationally. It is therefore an unbeatable opportunity to showcase the extraordinary variety and quality of the wines of our land, a unique product that cannot be found anywhere else in the world and which sets us apart from the rest’.

During the event, the Regional Minister remarked that ‘the presence of our wineries at these types of fairs is a demand from the sector, in collaboration with the Regional Ministry; if we attend these events it is because the wine sector is asking us to do so and has expressed their interest in participating to promote their product’. Furthermore, Simonet added, ‘the wine sector in the Balearic Islands is a mature sector with a lot of initiative, which is solidly structured with producers, wineries and quality brands’.

The Mallorcan wineries that have attended the fair are: Finca Biniagual, Vins Nadal, Can Fumat, Bodegas José L. Ferrer, Macià Batle, 7103 Petit Celler, Son Antem, Castell Miquel, Son Vich de Superna, Binigrau, Santa Catarina, Sa Cabana, Son LJS Bodega, Son Grau Gran, Can Axartell, Oliver Moragues, Vinyes Mortitx, AVA Vi, Son Prim, Bodega 65, Ses Talaioles, Los Dos Caballeros, Ca Sa Padrina, Es Fangar, Miquel Oliver, Pere Seda, Butxet and Miquel Gelabert. The wineries Torralba i Torralbenc and the Associació de Productors de Vi de Menorca came from Menorca, and from Ibiza, the wineries Ojo de Ibiza and Can Rich.

On the other hand, at the BWW we can also find other wineries from the Balearic Islands, such as Can Majoral, Mesquida Mora, Ibizkus Wines, Can Xanet and Can Verdura, in a specific section dedicated to artisanal wines.

Production of quality wines in the Balearic Islands

It should be recalled that in 2024 the production of quality wines from the Balearic Islands has suffered a decrease of 22% compared to 2023. A total of 8,515 tonnes of grapes were harvested from 2,169 hectares of vineyards, producing 53,253 hectolitres of quality wine. Thus, grape production has gone from 11,092 tonnes in 2023 to 8,515 tonnes this year, a reduction of 2,576 tonnes. This decrease was 26.1% for black grapes and 18.4% for white grapes. However, the area of vineyards in the archipelago is on an upward trend, with 2.8 % more than last year.

By appellations, the IGP Vi de la Terra Formentera has suffered the biggest decrease, 43.2 percent, while Ibiza has been in the average of the Balearic Islands, with 22.3 percent; in the Pitiusas, the lack of cereal and availability of other foods has meant that the effect of wood pigeons on grape harvests has been much greater than in previous vintages. On the island of Mallorca, the Binissalem and Pla i Llevant PDOs suffered a 27.7% and 25.4% drop in production, respectively, while the Vi de la Terra Mallorca PGI produced 17.9% less than in 2023. The smallest reduction in production has been on the island of Menorca, with a 5 % decrease.
