Galmés stressed that ‘these constructions, emblematic of the Mallorcan rural landscape, represent an important historical, architectural and ethnological legacy that it is essential to preserve for future generations, which is why we are taking advantage of this anniversary to disseminate our heritage throughout the country’.
The first flour windmills were documented in Mallorca in the 14th century, but they became more important from the 17th century onwards due to the increase in population. Subsequently, the construction and consolidation of flour mills between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century led to the gradual closure and abandonment of the windmills.
Nowadays, 622 flour windmills are preserved, and the municipalities where you can find the most are Palma, Felanitx, Llucmajor, Manacor and Porreres. The flour windmills of the Balearic Islands have become a very important tourist attraction.
Precisely for this reason, the ONCE delegate in the Balearic Islands, José Antonio Toledo, explained that this collaboration is being carried out ‘to make society aware of the importance of conserving this Mallorcan heritage’.
