Galmés added that ‘this dirham, minted in Mallorca in the 11th century, not only has great historical value but also marks the beginning of monetary production on the island. It now occupies a prominent place in the Museum of Mallorca, where it will be available to the public and visitors. The coin will be available to citizens and visitors at the Museum of Mallorca from this Wednesday, 26 February, and will be included in the museum’s permanent collection. It can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 2 pm, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 7 pm.

The acquisition of this piece, weighing 2.48 grams and made of silver, was carried out through the Ibercoin auction house for 408 euros. Its incorporation into the museum’s numismatic collection responds to the Consell de Mallorca’s commitment to the conservation and promotion of the island’s historical heritage.

The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, stresses that ‘this dirham is not only a valuable example of the art and economy of the period, but also has a unique historical value, as it marks the beginning of monetary production in Mallorca. It is a window into the past, which helps us to better understand our history and identity and, from now on, it will be available at the Museum of Mallorca’.

Finally, President Galmés assured that ‘the Museum of Mallorca is in a moment of growth, as evidenced by the almost 47,000 visitors last year, a record that shows the interest in our culture and heritage. We will continue to work to make our museums spaces of reference and meeting places’.
