Agricultural and livestock farms will be able to form part of the Local Sustainable Industry brand, which aims to reduce their carbon footprint
Agricultural and livestock farms will be able to form part of the Local Sustainable Industry guarantee mark, which has, among other objectives, that of calculating and reducing the carbon footprint of member companies. The Councillor for Enterprise, Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, and the Councillor for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, Joan Simonet, have signed an agreement to enable the ILS brand to extend its scope to include agricultural industries, which until now were not eligible.
Local Sustainable Industry (ILS) is a guarantee mark created by ADR Balears to identify and make visible the industries of the Balearic Islands committed to the environment that are involved in the calculation of the carbon footprint and its reduction. ILS currently has around fifty companies.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment stressed that ‘this agreement is another example of the Government’s commitment to the primary sector on the Islands, intending to improve the profitability of agricultural and livestock farms. We must also add the environmental aspect, with actions aimed at the protection, conservation and sustainability of our territory.
For his part, the councillor for Enterprise, Employment and Energy expressed his satisfaction that ‘ILS can also provide a service to the agricultural industry, a sector that until now had not been able to access the benefits of the guarantee mark’. Sáenz de San Pedro stated that ‘the Regional Ministry will continue to work to support and accompany companies on this path towards sustainability, as we are doing now with ILS’, while at the same time thanking the industries for the efforts they are already making to face the challenges of climate change and to become part of the solution.
The industries adhering to the programme are more energy and economically efficient. In addition, they have other benefits, such as the recognition of the brand values by consumers, more visibility through the ILS platform, or benefits in calls for subsidies from the Directorate General of Industry and Industrial Estates, and ADR Baleares as Ibavals. Agriculture has ensured that ILS companies will have advantages in future calls for aid from his ministry.
In addition, ILS has recently taken a further step in its commitment to the development and strengthening of the Balearic industrial sector with the launch of a new training channel, a space dedicated to updating knowledge and the main challenges and opportunities in terms of sustainability. Each month they will organise workshops to cover the training needs of different industrial sectors, including key areas such as circular economy, digitalisation, energy efficiency and sustainable production, among others.
