The councillor for the Environment, Pedro Bestard, attended the closing ceremony of the speciality project in dry stone construction that took place on the Raixa public estate.

A total of 14 students have been trained in the craft technique of dry stone construction, having been part of the free training course of SOIB ‘Construction of dry stone (’marger’), managed by the Department of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, in the framework of the call for grants to finance training on the job aimed at workers preferably unemployed (SOIB Training on the job for the unemployed), for the period 2024-2026.

A total of 14 students have been trained in the trade of ‘marger’ in the training course of the SOIB managed by the Consell de Mallorca

The project was carried out at the Escola de Margers training centre, located on the Raixa public estate (Bunyola) and lasted 300 hours. During this time, the students had the opportunity to learn the traditional trade and learn about the related culture.

This was emphasised by the second vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, during the closing ceremony of the dry stone construction course, which is part of the SOIB’s call for applications and co-financed by the State Public Employment Service (SEPE).

The Councillor for the Environment stressed ‘the importance of continuing to support this type of training institutionally and to promote the continuity of this trade, which is so deeply rooted in our culture. This commitment allows us to ensure qualified labour for dry-stone construction, which has such a long history on our island’.

Pedro Bestard explained that ‘the department’s Environmental Training Department promotes the learning of marger craftsmanship, through projects framed in SOIB calls, specialising in dry-stone construction to promote training in a craft technique that is part of the culture and landscape heritage of Mallorca’.

After handing over a document thanking each student for their participation, Pedro Bestard was able to talk to the students and teachers who had completed the training programme and checked the work they had done during the months of training at Raixa.
