The Balearic Islands makes progress in the implementation of international BPSO good practice guidelines
Currently, the Balearic Islands have six accreditations as centres committed to excellence. In addition to the Menorca Health Area and the hospitals of Inca, Manacor and Son Llàtzer, the Son Espases Hospital and Primary Care in Mallorca have been added this January, while the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital have begun the process to join the programme.
The progress of this project has led to the implementation in the Balearic Islands of ten good practice guides in the following areas: vascular access, support for adults waiting for or living with an ostomy, breastfeeding, prevention of falls, alternatives to the use of restraints, assessment and care of adults at risk of suicidal behaviour, assessment and approach to pain, care centred on the person and the family, palliative approach to care in the last twelve months of life and reduction of foot complications in diabetics.
In total, there are 748 professionals involved in the programme; since 2019 there have been more than 6,000 participations in training sessions; and 152 scientific publications have been made on the monitoring and evaluation of the programme in the different implementation centres.
For the Regional Minister of Health, ‘the implementation of the BPSO programme favours a holistic approach to people’s health while improving clinical practice through the training and updating of professionals’ knowledge and evidence-based decision-making. The continuous evaluation of processes also allows us to identify areas for improvement in which we need to continue working to guarantee the best possible care for our patients.
The IV Balearic Conference of BPSO centres was also attended by the director general of the Servei de Salut, Javier Ureña and the deputy director of Healthcare Cures, Concha Zaforteza; as well as the managing director of the Menorca Health Area, Bernardo Pax, and the director of nursing, Bàrbara Duque.
