The President of the Council of Eivissa explains the transversal work being done by the institution in different areas to achieve a ‘responsible’ tourism model that is an opportunity for everyone, not a threat.

The President of the Council of Eivissa, Vicent Marí, is taking part in Palma in the 6th Conference of Presidents of Provincial Councils, Councils and Councils of Spain, where more than thirty institutional leaders are debating the present and future challenges facing these administrations.

The President took part in a round table debate on responsible tourism, in which he highlighted the work promoted by the island institution to achieve a balance between tourists and residents ‘as a guarantee for the future of the island’.

In this regard, he referred to the pioneering Plan de Choque contra el Intrusismo as one of the main axes of management and control of illegal supply and, by extension, to guarantee coexistence between visitors and residents. ‘Tourism has been and will continue to be a source of opportunities, but it is necessary to regulate in an appropriate manner to prevent excesses from generating discomfort and rejection on the part of citizens’.

long with the Shock Plan, Marí detailed other actions that the Council is working on in collaboration with the tourism sector and the island’s trade union and business representatives, with the aim of reaching a consensus on decisions based on ‘rigorous work and based on real data, not perceptions’. He referred to the Social Dialogue Round Table, where issues and concerns affecting the island are discussed; the new Marketing Plan, which sets out the promotion of Eivissa as a destination to enjoy outside the main months of the season, with offers such as sport, culture and heritage, the MICE sector and gastronomy; and the launch of the new Tourism System for Eivissa, which will be implemented in the next few months, with the aim of promoting Eivissa as a destination to enjoy outside the main months of the season, with offers such as sport, culture and heritage, the MICE sector and gastronomy; in the implementation of the new Tourism Intelligence System to make decisions based on real data; in the drafting of the PIAT as a tool for establishing the island’s carrying capacity; and in the Law for the Control of Vehicle Influx, to guarantee coexistence between residents and tourists by regulating the vehicles that circulate on our roads from June to September.

With all this transversal work, which involves different departments of the Consell, the aim is to ensure, in Marí’s words, that tourism in Ibiza ‘continues to be an opportunity for everyone and not, as is currently happening, to be perceived as a threat’. In this way, he stressed the need to achieve tourism that is committed to the environment and that has a real, positive impact on the destination, because ‘tourism is either sustainable or it will not be’.
