The Mallorcan athlete Daniela García and the singer Jaume Anglada sponsor the fourth Conference of Children and Adolescents with Rheumatic Diseases of the Balearic Islands, which is being held at Son Espases.

Some thirty different rheumatic diseases affect more than two hundred children and adolescents in the Balearic Islands, so it is essential to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and access to effective treatments so that they can have a full and active life. On the occasion of WORD Day (World Young Rheumatic Diseases Day), the Hospital Universitario Son Espases has held today, simultaneously with other hospitals in the country, the Day of Children and Adolescents with Rheumatic Diseases.

The conference brought together specialists, patients and families from all over the Balearic Islands with the aim of raising the profile of children who, from an early age, are affected by pathologies such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic autoimmune diseases, vasculitis or autoinflammatory diseases, which can significantly alter their quality of life.

The event was opened by the Regional Minister of Health, Manuela García, who has set herself the goal of improving knowledge of these diseases, both in the health and educational spheres, in order to detect them earlier and enable children who suffer from them to have a better quality of life.

The meeting was attended by paediatricians, immunologists, resident doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, who discussed theoretical aspects and approaches, as well as the importance of self-care and physical exercise in children’s rheumatic diseases. In addition, some patients have collaborated in this, by sharing their experience with the disease through their research work.

Isabel Pérez and Andrea Puerto, nurse and TCAE of the Hospital, respectively, and some members of the ConArtritis association presented a book written by patients, a valuable testimony that collects their experiences, challenges and lessons learned in living with the disease.

One of the most emotional moments of the meeting was the closing ceremony, in which the Mallorcan athlete Daniela García, European under-23 champion in the 800 metres, encouraged the children to never give up and to fulfil their dreams. There could not have been a better closing than the live performance of Jaume Anglada, with songs such as ‘Cuida’m’ or ‘A tu lado’.
