Educació to move the Ibiza School of Art to the building of the former SOIB Blanca Dona training centre
Counsellor Vera indicated that IBISEC technicians will begin work on the building’s preliminary project and evaluate the technical report, concluding that the building does not meet the minimum requirements to guarantee the safety of users at a structural level. The Conselleria d’Empresa decided to close the building as a precautionary measure in December 2023, after the technicians warned of the serious deficiencies of the building.
Now, the change of use of the facilities has been carried out, which has passed from the SOIB to the Conselleria d’Educació, which has begun work to make the transfer of the School of Art’s premises a reality. With this move, Educació will respond to the demands of the centre, which is demanding a change of space and an improvement of the facilities.
Currently, the Ibiza School of Art teaches Bachelor’s Degrees in Plastic Arts and Design, the intermediate degrees in interactive graphic product assistance and artistic forging. It also offers higher degrees in artistic cabinetmaking, clothing modelling and furniture design. During this academic year 2024-2025, are 197 students enrolled in the centre.
The new centre, which will be located in the Sa Blanca Dona building, will have the necessary spaces to accommodate these studies so that the new Sa Blanca Dona facilities will have classrooms for theory classes, others for theoretical and practical classes, a classroom for each of the specific workshops corresponding to the training cycles and a multi-purpose space that can be used for exhibitions, artistic activities and other events.
In addition, a space will be included to move the specific 3D design machinery of the FABLAB (Fabrication Laboratory). It should be remembered that last December the Regional Ministry of Education and the Ibiza Town Hall signed a general protocol of actions to promote a FABLAB at the School of Art. This initiative aims to promote experimentation, creativity and innovation, as well as to foster multidisciplinary learning, the acquisition of basic skills and the improvement of technological capacities.
Councillor Vera explained that the Regional Ministry is committed to improving the facilities of the Ibiza School of Art, which will house the unification and expansion of the artistic baccalaureate with three units in the first year and three more units in the second year. The councillor added that ‘we aim to provide adequate infrastructures for special education, which has been neglected for many years’.
CEIP Balansat
Before visiting the Blanca Dona centre, councillor Vera, regional secretary Mateu Suñer, regional director Juan Álvarez and IBISEC manager Marco Alarcón attended the presentation of the project to extend CEIP Balansat, located in Sant Joan de Labritja. The event was also attended by the mayoress of Sant Joan, Tània Marí.
The project envisages the extension of the school with a library, a nursery classroom and a toilet block with a planned extension area of 115 square metres. With these actions, the centre will recover the former dining room, which has now been allocated to other uses. The project also includes the elimination of architectural barriers. The budget foreseen is around 550,000 € with a completion period of around 10 months.
At the end of the presentation of the project, two pupils thanked the councillor Vera for the improvements to their school.
