The competition has a total prize of 18,580 euros and this year inaugurates a new category: bookmark design inspired by Mallorcan rondalles, which joins the existing categories of narrative and poetry, reinforcing the island institution’s intention to inculcate the island’s cultural traditions.
The awards aim to raise awareness among students of the Mallorcan rondalles and also the work of Josep Maria Llompart, on the centenary of his birth, so that the works submitted in narrative and poetry must include, obligatorily, vocabulary specific to the rondalles or the work of the poet, as stipulated in the rules of the call for entries. Some of these words are: tira-tira, embalum, rebost, trinxet, cabellera, colgar, sarau, betzol, sarró, esflorar, falaguer, pitxorina, averany, testa, buina, garrit/garrida, petxines, bromera, astorada, esburbada, saba, eixutor, fat, bimbolles, befa, alimara, tumbagues, deixondir, bressolar, acaronar or agombolar.
Antònia Roca stresses the importance of launching initiatives like this to promote the island’s cultural heritage among young people: ‘the Premis Mallorca Jove represent a unique opportunity for young people to explore the rich cultural legacy we have, to delve into the lexical richness of Catalan and apply it creatively today, making Mallorca’s cultural heritage more alive than ever’.
Categories
There will be five categories in total: two for narrative, two for poetry and the new one for bookmark design.
This year’s novelty of the bookmark design is aimed exclusively at students in the first and second years of ESO, with a single category with a total of six prizes, worth 120 euros each and a complete collection of Antoni Maria Alcover’s Rondallas Mallorquinas.
The narrative category has two categories: Bearn, in recognition of Llorenç Villalonga, aimed at students in the third and fourth years of ESO, and Joana E., in commemoration of the novel by Maria-Antònia Oliver, aimed at students in the first and second years of baccalaureate.
On the other hand, the poetry category also has two categories: Balanguera, as it is the official anthem of the island, aimed at students in the third and fourth years of ESO, and Pi de Formentor, on the 150th anniversary of the creation of Costa i Llobera’s work, which is aimed at young people in the first and second years of baccalaureate.
Prizes
The prizes for narrative and poetry in all categories are: a first prize of 350 euros and 250 euros for the runner-up, as well as a complete set of Rondalles Mallorquines for each winner.
In the case of this year’s new category of bookmark design, six designs will be awarded, each worth 120 euros and a complete set of the Rondalles Mallorquines.
