La Coma is born, a new festival of literature and contemporary thought of the Consell de Mallorca
The activities will begin on Thursday 8th May with the interventions of Íngrid Guardiola and Jeanette Winterson, from 6 p.m. at the Es Baluard Museum, where they will also take place the following day, Friday 9th May, during the whole day. On Saturday 10th May, the activities will take place in different areas of the Casa Llorenç Villalonga – Literary Museum in Binissalem.
The La Coma festival will mainly feature conversations that will bring different types of writing into dialogue, as well as recitals and performances. Highlights include the play King Kong Theory, based on the book by Virginie Despentes; the concert by Amanda Mur; the performance Tales of the Body, by Andrea Cruz; and the recital Poetry or Never, by the poet and slammer Laura Sam.
Also included are workshops and master classes, such as that of Jeanette Winterson on Friday morning, or workshops with the collective Estampa and the artists Josep Pedrals, Mar Grimalt, Andrea Cruz and Míriam Cano.
The first edition of La Coma focuses on the theme of ‘Beyond the body’, exploring corporeality: whether it is present, virtual or absent; existence in the body or outside it; the limits of the body; notions of body-gender-identity; body subject/object; dreamed bodies, dissident bodies, bodies of flesh and pixel; technology and identity; enslavement of the body; pleasure and desire in and through the body, and a long etcetera that goes on and on. Many readings will be linked to delimit the contours and entrails of this theme, delving into the links between creation and thought, and highlighting the key importance of literature – writing, and reading – in social and cultural configuration.
La Coma is a project of the Consell de Mallorca and the Mallorca Literary Foundation, with the collaboration of the Es Baluard Museum, which will offer its spaces to host the festival on the 8th and 9th of May. On the 10th of May, the event will move to the garden of the Casa Llorenç Villalonga.
