Collective initiative within the framework of an environmental awareness and recovery project, with a wide participation of students and the local social fabric
Today a joint cleaning action has been carried out in the bay of Pollença between the Conselleria de la Mar i del Cicle de l’Aigua, through PortsIB, and the Town Council of Pollença, with the collaboration of the Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença. The main objective is to eliminate bulky waste and unused anchorages that affect marine biodiversity and navigational safety.
During the morning, the councillor for the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, the mayor of Pollença, Martí March, and the manager of PortsIB, Kiko Villalonga, visited the area to see first-hand how the clean-up action was being carried out.

Around 30 cubic metres of waste were removed from the seabed of the bay of Pollença in a joint action between PortsIB and the Town Council
This first community clean-up day has been carried out as an activity open to the public, with the participation of around 350 students, as well as specialised technicians and professional divers. All of them worked together to remove abandoned anchorages, boats in poor condition and other waste that degrades the marine ecosystem. The action has focused especially on Albercuix Beach and other points with a high concentration of underwater waste in the bathing area.
The day was organised in different areas with the involvement of social entities and local groups such as the Port de Pollença Royal Yacht Club, the Fishermen’s Guild, the Pollença Hotel Association, the Port de Pollença Neighbourhood Association and the Arrels Marines, Tramuntana Diving and GADMA groups. The latter were in charge of the underwater collection, which involved the participation of around twenty divers.
As a result of the intervention, around 30 cubic metres of waste were removed from the seabed. Among the materials extracted were around twenty dead anchorages, chains, sunken inflatable boats and other solid remains that posed a risk both to the natural environment and to the safety of navigation.
To ensure proper management of the waste, PortsIB has set up two 10 m³ watertight construction site containers, which will be transported by an authorised waste manager. A truck crane has also been made available to remove the dead concrete, which will remain temporarily stored on the quay until its final treatment.
This action is part of a specific plan for the environmental recovery of the bay of Pollença, intending to restore degraded marine spaces and promote a sustainable use of this area. The elimination of waste not only favours the conservation of the marine environment but also reinforces maritime safety and the well-being of the local community and visitors.
The Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirms its commitment to the protection of the marine environment and the conservation of the natural heritage. Through the Conselleria de la Mar i del Cicle de l’Aigua, and with the collaboration of PortsIB and local administrations, it will continue to work to promote initiatives that guarantee a balance between nautical activity and the preservation of coastal ecosystems.
