The Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra (OSIB) will present its ninth concert of the 2024–2025 season on April 10 at 8:00 p.m. at the Auditorium of Palma. This literary-themed performance will feature works by Bacalov, Lieberson, Telemann, Ravel, and Guridi, highlighting the influence of two literary giants: Pablo Neruda and Miguel de Cervantes.
The evening will showcase how literature continues to inspire musical composition, celebrating the expressive power of the written word translated into sound. Tickets are already available and can be purchased online via the Symphony’s official website (www.simfonicadebalears.com) or at the Auditorium’s box office.
The first half of the concert will pay tribute to Pablo Neruda, both the man and his poetic legacy. The program opens with the theme from Il Postino by Luis Bacalov, followed by Peter Lieberson’s “Songs of Love and Sorrow”, based on Neruda’s passionate love sonnets.
The second half will be dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes and his iconic character Don Quixote, with compositions reflecting the novel’s enduring cultural resonance. The orchestra will perform G. P. Telemann’s “Burlesque Overture on Don Quixote”, Maurice Ravel’s “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée”, and Jesús Guridi’s “An Adventure of Don Quixote”, a symphonic poem inspired by two chapters from Cervantes’ masterpiece.
