President Galmés inaugurated the forum and stressed the importance of promoting responsible tourism in conjunction with the local councils

The Consell de Mallorca’s Department of Tourism held a new Tourism Governance and Sustainability Forum in Mallorca this Friday at the Bunyola Municipal Theater in one of the island’s main areas, the Serra de Tramuntana. This is the second of those to be held throughout 2025 in different areas of Mallorca.

Throughout the day, attendees were able to listen, participate, and discuss the strategies and future objectives that the Island’s Directorate of Tourism, which was created during this legislature and focuses on governance and sustainability, has for Mallorca. Both its head, Pedro Mas, and the councillor of Tourism, José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, advanced during the forum the main lines that govern the legislature in the department.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, was in charge of inaugurating the forum, and during his speech, he said that “our mandate includes a commitment to collaborate with town councils and the tourism sector to promote a model of responsible tourism that is respectful of our environment and the Mallorcan people. And spaces like these help us to share knowledge and create synergies that help us to advance towards this goal”.

The CONFERENCE continued with an opening speech by Joan Tomàs Baos, deputy mayor of Bunyola Town Council, followed by a presentation by Pedro Mas, who outlined his department’s roadmap and the objectives of the legislature. He announced that since the beginning of the legislature he has already visited ‘all of Mallorca’s town councils, held more than 100 technical meetings with the institutions, and we also have 19 of our projects underway from this new insular directorate that I head, which aims to enhance the work of the town councils and help them’.
Mas also explained that his insular directorate is currently managing a total of 19 projects in the Serra de Tramuntana area, which are divided into 3 PSTD (sustainable tourism destination projects), 9 CBAT (Consorci Bolsa d’Allotjaments Turístics) projects, and 7 subsidies to promote tourist information in the municipalities. All of them for a value of 5.1 million euros.

Following the opening ceremony and Pedro Mas’ remarks, a report on the economic, social and environmental situation of the Serra de Tramuntana area was presented by Tolo Deyà, dean of the UIB’s Faculty of Tourism, and three round tables were held: one on the Serra de Tramuntana tourism model, another on the impact of seasonality in the area, and lastly, one on youth and talent in the tourism sector.
The Councillor for Tourism was in charge of closing the forum, and during his speech, he stated that his department’s ‘commitment is to promote a model of responsible tourism within our environmental and social limits’ and that “this is where tourism governance plays an important role, because it is essential to work in the destinations.
Rodríguez pointed out that “the active participation of the community and the sector in decision-making on tourism is fundamental. And, therefore, the role of local councils is fundamental”.
