Environment will deliver these educational publications in the various events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the park to be held throughout 2025

The Department of Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports of the Consell de Mallorca has published two comics: L’àguila peixatera a sa Dragonera and Posem fre a les espècies exòtiques invasores; and the Guía de plantes i líquens de sa Dragonera i els seus usos, which provide us with relevant information about different species and the preservation of their habitats. This didactic material will be present in the acts that will be carried out on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the natural park throughout 2025.

Framed in the European project PRO.GRE.SS, these three educational publications are the result of the educational activities related to this natural space that have been carried out in recent months, through a participatory process that has involved the local community of Dragonera Blava, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), environmental organizations and institutions such as the Govern de les Illes Balears and the Town Hall of Andratx and companies related to the service of aquatic activities and the world of fishing. These three educational publications, in Spanish and Catalan, have been published by the Consell de Mallorca.

In addition, taking advantage of this year’s anniversary, the management of the Natural Park of sa Dragonera will organise a series of activities related to these publications, which will serve to celebrate the historic anniversary of three decades as a natural park.

The second vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, pointed out that ‘through an entertaining way, such as the comic strips or a small illustrated guide, we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the ecosystem of the island of sa Dragonera and learn a little more about the environmental wonders of the island’.

‘These publications allow us to learn more about the species, the fleet and the fauna, and in this way, through knowledge, raise awareness of the importance of protecting our natural spaces, such as sa Dragonera, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary as a natural park, which is a source of pride for all Mallorcans’, added the councillor for the environment.

Discovering the flora and fauna of sa Dragonera through cartoons

  • The cartoon L’àguila peixatera a sa Dragonera about the pressures suffered by the osprey and the measures that can be taken was produced in collaboration with Save the Med, Dragonera Blava and the local population, including representatives of sectors potentially involved in the protection of this species. The illustrations are by Luis Resines (Pelopantón).
  • The comic Posem fre a les espècies exòtiques invasores deals with the loss of biodiversity related to the presence of invasive alien species and how we can get involved in their detection and control. This publication is the result of the work of an expert from the UIB, the Town Council of Andratx and the participants of a workshop who jointly produced part of the text that appears in the comic. The illustrations are by Luis Resines (Pelopantón).
  • The Guia de plantes i líquens de sa Dragonera i els seus usos offers a small sample of the most relevant flora and ethnological uses related to the traditions of the area. Its content was forged as a result of the contribution of the 50 students of 5th grade of a primary school of the CEIP Es Vinyet of Andratx, who visited sa Dragonera to take the photographs that appear in the guide and who worked in class and with their families to elaborate the contents. The organisation Mare Balear has also collaborated. The design and illustrations are by Diana Farràs i Serra.

The European project PROGRESS aims to bring local communities closer to protected natural areas and to encourage the participation of local communities in European Union issues related to the environment, landscape conservation and natural heritage in protected areas.
