The Regional Ministry of Health renews the agreement to set up the Balearic Islands Consumer Arbitration Board

The agreement with the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 does not generate financial commitments for any of the parties

The Consell de Govern has authorised the Regional Ministry of Health to sign a new collaboration agreement with the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 to continue developing consumer arbitration in the Balearic Islands.

The Government has agreed to renew the agreement to continue promoting the management and administration of institutional consumer arbitration in our territory by the Balearic Islands Arbitration Board.

The agreement does not generate financial commitments for any of the parties involved and the Consell de Govern empowers the Regional Minister of Health to introduce into the clauses of the agreement any non-substantive modifications resulting from the appropriate processing of the file.

Consumer arbitration is a tool for resolving conflicts that may arise between consumers and companies or professionals, without the need to go to the ordinary courts of justice.

Health will continue to develop consumer arbitration in the Balearic Islands

The Consumer Arbitration Board of the Balearic Islands is the body of the Autonomous Administration that supports and administers consumer arbitration in the Community. It was initially created by means of an agreement signed by the Regional Ministry of Health and Social Security and the National Institute of Consumer Affairs of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs on 22 April 1994.

This agreement was in force for almost 27 years, and on 5 April 2021 the Balearic Minister for Health and Consumer Affairs and the Minister for Consumer Affairs renewed it for a further four years. Now the Conselleria is renewing the agreement again, with the authorisation of the Consell de Govern, under Law 40/2015 on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector, as the agreements are not valid indefinitely, but can be renewed every four years.

According to the Consumer Affairs Department’s 2024 Annual Report, on 31 December 2024 there were 1,673 companies in our Islands adhering to Consumer Arbitration; moreover, last year the arbitrators of the Balearic Arbitration Board resolved 709 disputes between consumers and companies.

The renewal of the agreement represents a firm commitment to the consumer protection policies promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands.
