The Minister Joan Simonet stressed that this type of initiative highlights the quality of this product, which also helps to maintain traditional production structures, such as the fishermen’s guilds: ‘We want the consumer to demand it, to identify it and, above all, to value it as a differentiated product’

The Government and the Pollença Town Council are organising the first edition of the Mostra de la Tonyina, to promote the consumption of this local product
At the presentation, Simonet stressed that “participation in fairs like this one once again demonstrates the Government’s commitment to promoting the products of our land. This type of initiative highlights the quality of this local, local product, which also helps to maintain traditional production structures, such as our fishermen’s guilds. It should be remembered that tuna has a fishing quota of around 50 tonnes per year in the Balearic Islands”.
The councillor also pointed out that “we want it to be a product that can be found regularly in restaurants on the islands. We want consumers to demand it, to identify it and, above all, to value it as a differentiated, high-quality product”.
The fair will offer a gastronomic experience with local restaurateurs and chefs and local wineries. Among the activities on the programme, there will be live cooking sessions by different chefs and restaurants in the Bay of Pollença, with preparations that will, of course, have tuna as the main ingredient, and a pairing of wines from the Can Xanet and Vinyes Mortitx wineries. In addition, the Conselleria has scheduled a live demonstration of ‘ronqueo’, the sound produced when the tuna is cut, by Toni Fiol, an expert in this traditional technique, who will also explain the process step by step. Once this activity is over, the tuna used in the demonstration will be auctioned off to the public in attendance.
The programme of the 1st Mostra de la Tonyina includes musical and sporting activities, among others, as well as the presence of an information stand to publicise the new vocational training course in Nautical Studies taught at the IES Clara Hammerl secondary school in Port de Pollença.
