The Symphony Orchestra Concludes the 2024–25 Subscription Season with Violinist Alena Baeva and Conductor Antonio Méndez

Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto is one of the most important works in the violin repertoire of the 20th century. Composed in 1904 and structured in three movements, the piece evokes the Nordic landscapes of Northern Europe. The Symphony will be joined by violinist Alena Baeva for this performance.

Described by the New York Classical Review as a “magnetic presence” with a “consistently fascinating sound technique,” violinist Alena Baeva is considered one of the most exciting, versatile, and captivating soloists performing today. She has collaborated with some of the world’s leading conductors, including Gustavo Gimeno, Paavo Järvi, Marek Janowski, Vladimir Jurowski, Tomáš Netopil, and Riccardo Minasi.

Born in Kyrgyzstan with Tatar-Slavic roots, Baeva has a passionate musical curiosity and already boasts an extensive repertoire of more than fifty violin concertos. She actively promotes lesser-known works while also performing more popular pieces from the violin repertoire. Recently, she has performed compositions by Bacewicz, Karaev, Karłowicz, and Silvestrov.

The concert will close with Symphony No. 4 by J. Brahms—one of the greatest Romantic symphonies of all time, known for its tragic, reflective, and philosophical character.

The season finale will be conducted by Mallorcan maestro Antonio Méndez, one of Europe’s most established and in-demand conductors, thanks to his strong relationships with many major orchestras.

In recent years, Méndez has enjoyed great success conducting orchestras such as the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Wiener Symphoniker, and Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra.
