The purpose of these apartments is to provide housing to survivors completing their recovery process

The Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) has granted two housing units on the island of Mallorca to the Es Garrover Foundation for use by women survivors of gender-based violence, as part of a collaboration with the Balearic Institute for Women (IBDONA). This marks the first time IBAVI has transferred housing units to this foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on supporting people with mental health disorders and their families.

José Luis Mateo, Minister of Housing, Territory and Mobility, together with IBAVI Manager Roberto María Cayuela, formalised the agreement in a signing event with IBDONA Director Cati Salom and Es Garrover Technical Director Laura Rodríguez. The foundation has managed the properties since mid-March and is now responsible for their administration.

IBAVI Grants Two Homes to Gender-Based Violence Survivors through Es Garrover Foundation in Collaboration with IBDONA

The agreement aims to provide transitional housing for women who have previously received support at Casa Violeta, a service run by Es Garrover. These women, having overcome an emotional crisis, can continue their recovery in a safe and autonomous environment, far from their abuser. The objective is to offer these units as temporary housing for survivors nearing the end of their recovery journey.

The units include two bedrooms, with surface areas ranging from 52 to 67 square meters. The agreement is valid for four years, with the possibility of a four-year extension. It is part of a broader framework agreement between IBAVI and IBDONA to allocate protected housing to public administrations and nonprofit organisations that support victims of gender-based violence.

To apply for these homes, public bodies and nonprofits must go through IBDONA, which reviews and approves applications. Additionally, IBDONA offers a grant of up to €20,000 to help furnish and equip each property.

With this agreement, IBAVI now counts 29 housing units allocated specifically for gender-based violence survivors, as part of a larger group of 180 homes granted to third-sector organisations and public entities for vulnerable groups. Of these, 81 homes are for emergency housing situations, 42 for people with physical or mental disabilities, 28 for minors or youth at risk of social exclusion, and 29 for women survivors of gender-based violence.

The Es Garrover Foundation, based in Inca and founded in 1997, is a member of 3 Salut Mental, the Mental Health Federation of Mallorca, and the Third Social Sector of the Balearic Islands. Its mission is to support and improve the quality of life of people with mental health disorders and their families, while also working against gender-based violence.

The organisation actively promotes the social and occupational integration of the people it supports and advocates for societal transformation through awareness campaigns. A regional leader in mental health services, the foundation currently has over 60 professionals, assisting more than 350 individuals and families annually.
